Passionate about precision medicine and advancing the healthcare industry?
Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time.
We built Tempus to collect, structure, and organize data from disparate sources to power innovation and discovery. We’re now looking for a Director, Data Solutions – RWE & Insights to join our rapidly growing Life Sciences team.
This is a scientist-first leadership role. You’ll set the scientific strategy for Tempus’ partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, working directly with their R&D, translational, and clinical development teams. You’ll take on their hardest research questions and design analyses and study concepts that answer them with Tempus’ multimodal real-world data. You will be directly responsible for coding and generating insights for clients as an individual contributor, while leading a team of scientists doing the same across the portfolio. In this role, commercial success comes from scientific credibility.
Role overview- Approximately 75% of this role is scientific work: designing analyses, scoping studies, reviewing methods, performing proof-of-value analysis and presenting results to our external and internal partners. The remainder is team leadership, product development and partnership growth.
- You will stay hands-on-keyboard, exploring Tempus data and performing proof-of-value analyses for priority opportunities.
ResponsibilitiesScientific Leadership- Serve as the senior scientific advisor to biopharma partners, translating their pipeline, biomarker, and clinical development questions into feasible, well-designed analyses using Tempus clinical, molecular, and imaging data
- Personally design and execute proof-of-value analyses and cohort feasibility assessments for high-priority or complex opportunities
- Define the scientific approach for real-world evidence and translational projects, including study design, endpoint selection, cohort definition, and statistical and computational methods
- Review and sign off on the scientific content of scopes, SOWs, and deliverables produced by the team, ensuring methodological rigor and accurate representation of the data
- Present findings to partner R&D and clinical teams, and contribute to publications, posters, and conference presentations where appropriate
- Stay current on oncology drug development, real-world data methodology, regulatory use of RWE, and AI and multimodal modeling
- Partner with Tempus product, data science, and abstraction teams to identify data gaps surfaced by partner needs and shape the roadmap for new data products
Team Leadership- Mentor and develop more junior Data Solutions scientists, growing their domain knowledge as well as their client-facing skills
- Assign and flex team members across pharma, biotech, and innovation-economy accounts based on expertise and opportunity value
- Build standardized, scalable scientific workflows (feasibility templates, analysis frameworks, data POVs) so the team can rapidly support more partners without lowering quality
- Act as the first point of escalation for complex or non-standard scientific requests, and involve senior leadership early on enterprise-level opportunities
Partnerships and Revenue Growth- Meet or exceed team revenue goals for the Data Solutions portfolio while delivering on strategic objectives for key client accounts
- Build deep relationships with R&D, translational, and commercial executives at partner organizations based on shared scientific understanding, identifying new value-creation opportunities
- Identify and shape multi-year collaborations that position Tempus data as the foundational layer for broader partnerships across Tempus products
- Track progress against strategic objectives and revenue goals; review progress and setbacks regularly with the broader Account Team and Tempus Leadership
Cross-functional Collaboration- Partner with the Account Team (Key Account Directors, Alliance Management, Operations) to qualify opportunities and ensure success against the pipeline
- Communicate scientific and technical plans and outcomes to cross-functional internal and external stakeholders, from bench scientists to executives
- Contribute to the development of the Life Sciences portfolio by sharing partner feedback with Leadership; maintain a solution-oriented mindset
- Travel approximately 20% of working time, domestically and internationally
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications- PhD, MD, or equivalent advanced degree combining quantitative or computational training (e.g. Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics) with biological or medical knowledge (e.g. Cancer Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Immunology, Molecular Biology)
- Deep expertise in oncology and in Real World Evidence, Translational Research / Computational Biology, or Drug Discovery methodologies, with working knowledge of the others
- Hands-on proficiency in R, including statistical and visualization tooling
- Experience with clinical trial design, real-world evidence study design, and integrative methods for multimodal clinical and omics data
- A track record of scientific output, such as publications, regulatory or HTA submissions, or partner-facing study results
- Proven ability to build deep, trusted relationships with pharmaceutical scientists and executives based on scientific credibility
- A leader who fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment that promotes creativity, innovation, and scientific excellence
- Proactive mindset that bridges ideas to implementable solutions; comfortable in agile environments with quick iterations
Preferred Experience- 10+ years of post-graduate experience, including 7+ years as a hands-on-keyboard scientist in one of the disciplines above
- 5+ years working at or with life sciences companies in R&D and/or real-world data
- 3+ years leading or mentoring scientific teams, with direct people management preferred
- Familiarity with AI/agentic tools in the current and continually expanding computational landscape
- Experience in a client-facing scientific role with revenue or quota responsibility
The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from California and may vary for other locations (Colorado, Illinois, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position.
