The
Director, Assistant General Counsel - International Trade Compliance (ITC) is the enterprise legal leader responsible for developing, leading, and continuously improving Ball's global trade compliance program across sanctions, export controls, customs, tariffs, and related trade requirements. This role provides strategic legal counsel and practical business leadership to support compliant growth, reduce risk, and enhance operational continuity across Ball's global manufacturing and supply chain operations.
As Ball continues to mature its global trade compliance program, this leader will establish governance frameworks, strengthen oversight and escalation processes, implement sustainable controls, and drive consistency across regions. The role partners closely with Legal, Supply Chain, Logistics, Procurement, Finance, Commercial teams, and executive leadership to ensure trade compliance risks are effectively managed and integrated into business operations.
The successful candidate will bring deep trade compliance expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven ability to influence stakeholders, build programs, and navigate complex regulatory environments.
Essential Responsible Areas1) Enterprise ITC Program Leadership (Global)- Serve as the internal legal subject matter expert on global trade laws impacting Ball's aluminum packaging business, including sanctions, export controls, customs, tariffs, anti-dumping and countervailing duties; translate regulatory requirements into scalable business controls.
- Lead the development, enhancement, and implementation of Ball's global ITC program and operating model, including governance, standards, oversight, escalation pathways, and accountability frameworks.
- Establish and reinforce a strong culture of compliance across regions and functions.
2) Risk Controls, Policies, and Enabling Tools- Own the design and lifecycle management of ITC risk controls, including policies, procedures, manuals, playbooks, toolsets, and technology enablement, and ensure implementation across global operations.
- Identify, manage, escalate, and remediate trade compliance issues; drive corrective actions and sustainable prevention.
- Implement and sustain role-based and risk-based trade compliance training for executives, commercial teams, supply chain, procurement, logistics, finance, and plant leadership.
- Partner with stakeholders to evaluate and implement trade compliance technologies and process improvements that strengthen controls, visibility, and operational effectiveness.
3) Investigations, Disclosures, and Regulator Engagement- Strategically manage and conduct investigations into potential trade non-compliance and, where required, lead disclosures and submissions to U.S. and non-U.S. government agencies, including the management of outside counsel.
- Maintain productive relationships with relevant government agencies and authorities and lead engagement with officials as needed to support compliant outcomes.
4) Monitoring Regulatory Change and Advising Business Strategy- Monitor proposed and enacted changes in trade laws and regulations and advise business stakeholders on implications for Ball's operations, customers, suppliers, and global footprint.
- Provide legal counsel on tariffs, including Section 232, anti-dumping and countervailing duties, sanctions and export-control screening expectations, and restricted-party developments; ensure timely review and response to newly designated parties or rule updates.
5) Risk Assessments, Audits, Metrics, and Continuous Improvement- Lead or oversee trade compliance risk assessments; define mitigation strategies and prioritize program enhancements based on risk.
- Facilitate internal audits and assessments of global sites and functions and track remediation to closure.
- Define and monitor trade compliance metrics and KPIs, leveraging analytics to measure effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
- Establish reporting and escalation mechanisms that provide leadership with visibility into key trade compliance risks, trends, and remediation activities.
6) Cross-Functional Partnership and Transactions Support- Partner with Supply Chain, Logistics, Procurement, Finance/Tax, Commercial, Government Affairs, and regional leadership to embed trade compliance into end-to-end processes.
- Provide legal advice on ITC issues in due diligence and integration for strategic transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures.
- Review and advise on contracts and commercial arrangements where trade compliance representations, covenants, and operational commitments are implicated.
Required Qualifications- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in trade compliance.
- Demonstrated expertise in anti-dumping duties, countervailing duties, Section 232 tariffs, customs compliance, sanctions, and export controls.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex investigations and managing submissions/disclosures to government entities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, influence senior stakeholders, and translate complex regulatory requirements to non-legal audiences.
- In-house counsel experience, ideally in global manufacturing and/or complex global supply chains
- Depth in key regulatory frameworks such as OFAC, EAR, and ITAR (as relevant to the business and risk profile), plus experience with non-U.S. regimes.
- Experience implementing/administering trade compliance technology solutions and operational controls at scale
- Proven experience leading trade compliance programs, investigations, audits, remediation, and risk-control initiatives.
- Demonstrated people leadership and ability to influence senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Ability to translate complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical business processes and controls.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience developing, implementing, or transforming a global trade compliance program.
- International trade compliance experience outside the United States.
- In-house counsel experience within a global manufacturing, industrial, or complex supply chain environment.
- Experience implementing trade compliance technology, automation, or screening solutions.
- Experience managing disclosures, submissions, or other engagement with government agencies and regulatory authorities.
Language RequiredCompensation & Benefits:
- Expected Hiring Salary Range: $147,200 - $215,240 (Salary to be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
