The Team
Credit Ratings is an integral part of S&P Global's Global Ratings Services, bringing together a diverse group of more than 1,400 analysts across key financial centers worldwide. The Public Finance practice delivers credit opinions on public-sector issuers — including states and provinces, local governments, public agencies, not-for-profit entities, and infrastructure-related municipal issuers — translating economic trends, revenue stability, governance, and long-term liabilities into transparent views that help communities finance essential services. The Charter Schools team covers more than 600 charter school, independent school, and community college and community college district ratings, combining rigorous analytical standards with a deep understanding of the unique credit dynamics within these sectors.

This role offers a meaningful opportunity to shape credit analysis and market understanding across one of the most dynamic and growing segments of the public finance market. As Director, the role carries responsibility for managing a complex portfolio, driving analytical quality and consistency, and coaching and mentoring a team of analysts — with direct impact on the credit opinions that communities, investors, and market participants rely on. The Director also contributes to market outreach and thought leadership, reinforcing S&P Global Ratings' presence and credibility across the charter and independent school sectors.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead, coach, and develop analysts, building credit expertise and the capability to effectively leverage digital and AI-enabled tools.
- Drive adoption of modern analytical practices by embedding generative AI, advanced analytics, and automation into monitoring, drafting, research, and workflow execution — improving speed, consistency, and analytical depth while preserving human judgment and accountability.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and analytical rigor across the team.
Core Analytical & Delivery
- Lead high-quality credit and capital markets analysis across assigned issuers and sectors, delivering forward-looking insights that support ratings, monitoring activities, risk assessments, and rating committee discussions in a fast-paced environment.
- Translate issuer and sector developments into clear, decision-ready analytical perspectives, integrating scenario analysis and forward-looking risk considerations.
- Identify and implement workflow improvements in partnership with Data, Technology, Compliance, In-Business Control, and Methodology teams to scale best practices.
Stakeholder & Market Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with issuers, investors, and market participants through credible, insight-led engagement.
- Support market outreach and thought leadership efforts, communicating complex, data-informed analysis clearly while maintaining analytical independence and objectivity.
Risk Management and Operating
- Ensure strong analytical execution with clear documentation, high-quality outputs, and adherence to governance and regulatory standards.
- Maintain oversight of portfolio risk to identify and escalate emerging risks early.
- Apply disciplined oversight to the use of AI and automated outputs, ensuring transparency, explainability, and appropriate controls are in place.
Compensation/Benefits Information (US Candidates)
S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $140,000 to $198,000 USD. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual's geographic location, as well as experience level, skill set, training, licenses and certifications. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. This role is eligible to receive additional S&P Global benefits. What We're Looking For
Required Skills and Experience:
- An S&P Global employee at this level would typically have 7+ years of relevant experience in public finance, credit analysis, or a related field.
- Strong credit analysis expertise, with the ability to deliver high-quality, forward-looking analytical output at pace across a complex and diverse portfolio.
- Experience mentoring or managing analysts, with a demonstrated ability to build team capability and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Practical experience using generative AI, advanced data analytics, or automation tools to enhance research, monitoring, and workflow efficiency while maintaining strong validation and analytical discipline.
- Strong relationship management and communication skills, with the ability to present complex analytical insights clearly and credibly to issuers, investors, and market participants while maintaining analytical independence.
- Disciplined approach to portfolio risk oversight, with the ability to identify emerging risks early, escalate appropriately, and operate within established governance frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work consistently in a deadline-driven environment.
Preferred or Helpful Experience:
- Experience working with charter school, independent school, or community college ratings, or a strong understanding of municipal sectors with a desire to expand into these areas.
- Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. A master's degree or professional certification (such as CFA) is highly valued. We welcome candidates from traditional finance disciplines as well as diverse academic backgrounds that support innovative and critical thinking.
Additional Information:
- We require all candidates who reach the final stage of our interview process to attend at least one in-person interview, which is ordinarily at your nearest S&P Global Ratings office. This must be completed before we can proceed to an offer.
- Employees are required to work from the office a minimum of two days per week.
