The job:
As a Developer Support Engineer for the Open API, you’ll help shape the future of construction technology from day one. You’ll be the go-to technical expert for builders and developers who are building on our newly opened platform. This role is the perfect blend of deep technical problem-solving and real account ownership. You’ll fix what you can on the spot and hand the rest to engineering with everything they need to move quickly. Your work will give construction professionals the tools to run their businesses with speed and confidence. As our first Developer Support Engineer, you’ll have a rare chance to build our support approach from the ground up and make it your own.
What you will do:
- Own the API support queue and troubleshoot sign-in, token and permission issues.
- Reproduce issues and write clear bug reports, following them through engineering.
- Keep customers informed during outages and critical events.
- Act as the main technical contact for API customers, watching usage to catch risks early.
- Show builders what they can build today and share their requests with Product.
- Coach frontline support and keep API guides, FAQs and runbooks accurate.
- Embrace using AI as a tool to enhance your work, while remaining open to learning, applying critical thinking, and owning the quality of your final work.
Who you are and what you need:
- 3+ years in technical support, integrations support or API troubleshooting, with a strong track record of supporting customers directly (or 2+ years with proven autonomy).
- Ability to make and read REST API calls in curl or Postman and interpret HTTP status codes and JSON errors.
- Skill troubleshooting authorization flows, including client credentials and refresh tokens.
- Clear communicator who explains technical answers plainly and stays calm with frustrated customers.
- Quick learner who can explain how a new product’s records relate.
- Preferred experience in Python or JavaScript, MCP and agentic AI tooling, construction knowledge, and log tools such as Datadog or Sentry.
We are giving you:
- Exceptional health packages, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus life insurance and short- and long-term disability benefits
- A 401(k) plan with Buildertrend matching contributions to help you plan for the future
- Generous paid time off, 11 paid holidays, plus personal days to make sure you have time to recharge
- Parental leave and paid sabbaticals to support you during life’s big moments
- Volunteer time off – because giving back matters
- Wellness program and onsite fitness center to keep you feeling your best
- Opportunities for hybrid or remote work to give you the flexibility you need
- Technology reimbursement to help cover costs for the tech you need to do your job from home
- Free daily lunches when you’re at our HQ office, plus monthly events to connect with your team
