Full Job Description
Fisher Dynamics is currently seeking a Design Mechanical Tooling Engineer for our corporate AME team in Saint Clair Shores, MI. This position is responsible for creating tooling and automation solutions intended to improve safety, quality, productivity, equipment reliability, and manufacturing efficiency. The position works cross-functionally with Manufacturing Engineering, Controls Engineering, Operations, Quality, and external suppliers, particularly during new product launches, automation initiatives, process improvements, and ongoing manufacturing optimization.

Candidates MUST be local to the Metro Detroit Area. Relocation is not available.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Tooling Design
    • Manufacturing tooling, fixtures, nests, gauges, assembly aids, and automated work-holding systems.
    • Robotic end-of-arm tooling for material handling, assembly, inspection, and machine-tending applications.
    • Three-dimensional models, detailed drawings, assembly layouts, and Bills of Material using CAD software.
    • Tooling concepts for automated and semi-automated manufacturing processes.
    • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and verify that tooling satisfies product and process requirements.
  • Automation Equipment Development
    • Design mechanical systems for automation cells, assembly stations, and manufacturing equipment.
    • Support the integration of robotics, conveyors, sensors, vision systems, pneumatics, and servo-driven mechanisms, while coordinating with Controls Engineers to integrate electrical and mechanical systems successfully.
    • Participate in equipment testing, validation, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Manufacturing Support
    • Provides technical support and investigates tooling failures during fabrication, assembly, installation, and production launches and implement corrective actions.
    • Lead continuous improvement efforts aimed at reducing cycle time, improving quality, increasing productivity, and strengthening tool reliability through preventive maintenance initiatives.
  • Project Management
    • Manage tooling and automation projects from initial concept through implementation. Key project activities include preparing technical specifications, timelines, and cost estimates; coordinating suppliers, machine builders, and internal stakeholders; and tracking deliverables to keep execution within budget and schedule.
  • Safety & Quality
    • Confirm that designs comply with OSHA, ANSI, and company safety standards.
    • Participates in PFMEA, DFMEA, machine risk assessments, and design reviews; incorporates ergonomic and safety considerations into tooling; and supports APQP and launch activities for new manufacturing programs.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field

Experience

3-5 years of experience in tooling design, machine design, automation engineering, or manufacturing engineering, including experience designing tooling and fixtures for automated manufacturing environments and supporting equipment installation and production launches.

Skills

Proficiency in SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, Inventor, AutoCAD

Technical knowledge of tooling and fixture design, robotic end-of-arm tooling, pneumatic systems, servo-driven mechanisms, machine design principles, GD&T, manufacturing process, and automation equipment

Knowledge of Automotive Manufacturing, preferably in Seating

Experience with FANUC, ABB, KUKA & Universal Robot applications

Assembly automation & material-handling systems

Lean Manufacturing

Strong technical understanding of Microsoft Office

Six Sigma, APQP, PPAP, PFMEA Methodologies
