Full Job Description
The Deputy Superintendent of Operations is a key member of the district's leadership team. Overseeing, Human Resources, Finance, and Operations, the Deputy Superintendent is responsible for effective planning and execution against major district operational goals and initiatives. The Deputy Superintendent serves as the advisor to the Superintendent on district operational issues. The Deputy Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of district operations and cross-departmental processes and initiatives, as well as providing high quality customer service to schools and other central office departments. The Deputy Superintendent provides direct support on key district priorities, such as labor management and contract negotiations, implementation of student-based budgeting, and development and execution of district's capital plan.

The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 19,000 students attending our 35 schools. PPSD employs more than 2,900 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 15 elementary schools, 4 PreK - 8 schools, 6 middle schools, and 10 high schools. Of our employees, approximately 1,730 are educators, and more than 800 others directly support students and families in our schools.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

District Leadership
  • Oversees district operations; serves as advisor to Superintendent on operational issues
  • Serves on Superintendent's Executive Leadership team
  • Responsible for ensuring effective planning and execution to meet district goals
  • Represents the district in key public settings, including school board, city council, and the general assembly
  • Liaises with key district stakeholders, including the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), City of Providence, School Board, Parent Advisory Council, and District-Wide Advisory Council
  • Works closely with Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent of Academics, and Chief of Staff to ensure the smooth functioning of cross departmental/district activities

Human Resources
  • In conjunction with the Chief Talent Officer (CTO), develops district's human capital strategy and monitors successful execution
  • Reviews HR data with CTO regularly to monitor department progress
  • Serves as a key member of negotiating team for key labor contracts

Finance
  • In conjunction with the departmental lead for Finance, develops district's financial strategy and monitors successful execution
  • Effectively plans for the short and long-term financial health of the district and ensures financial solvency
  • Keeps Superintendent, School Board, and other district leadership aware of district financial position
  • Engages directly in key district initiatives related to finance, including implementation of student-based budgeting.

Operations
  • In conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer, develops district's operational strategy and monitors successful execution across enrollment, technology, transportation, registration, food services, safety, and facilities
  • Engages directly in key district initiatives related to operations, including successful development and execution of district capital plan.

Team Management
  • Provides supervision and coaching of department heads for Human Resources, Finance, and Operations
  • Ensures smooth functioning of district processes that span multiple departments, including enrollment and budget projections, budget and staffing plan development, and start/close of school preparations
  • Responsible for building a team with high expectations for quality of work


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in relevant field preferred
  • Superintendent RIDE certification required


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in school operations, human resources, and/or finance
  • Experience with leading and managing large teams
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends, as needed
  • Experience in large, urban district
