Dept of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Department Chair

The UT San Antonio School of Dentistry invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. We seek an accomplished clinician, at the Professor level, with a strong record of excellence in clinical care and academic leadership to guide a dynamic department within a leading academic health center.

The Chair will provide strategic vision, administrative leadership, and operational oversight for all aspects of the department, advancing the School's missions in education, patient care, research, and community service.

Key Responsibilities are:

Leadership and Administration -

• Provide visionary leadership for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including strategic planning, faculty development, resource management, and educational administration.
• Provide responsible fiscal stewardship of the department by developing and managing budgets, aligning resources with strategic priorities, monitoring financial performance, and ensuring compliance with institutional policies.
• Lead faculty recruitment and retention efforts to attract, develop, and retain high-performing faculty who advance the department's academic, clinical, research, and service missions.
• Partner closely with the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration to develop and implement an equitable, competitive faculty compensation and incentive model that supports recruitment, retention, performance, and the department's strategic priorities.
• Identify and advance opportunities to expand patient referral networks, improve access and patient flow, and enhance clinical productivity and overall departmental clinical performance.
• Explore and develop new and diversified revenue opportunities, including ambulatory surgery center (ASC) partnerships, community-based operating room collaborations, and other innovative clinical and business models that support sustainable departmental growth.
• Foster a collaborative and high-performing departmental culture.
• Ensure compliance with accreditation standards for predoctoral and residency programs.
• Ensure compliance with regental, institutional, and School policies and procedures.
  Clinical Excellence -
• Maintain and advance high-quality, evidence-based oral and maxillofacial surgery.
• Support clinical innovation and integration of emerging technologies.

Education -

• Oversee predoctoral and advanced oral and maxillofacial education programs.
• Promote excellence in teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development.
• Support interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning initiatives.

Research & Scholarship -

• Lead and grow a vibrant and collaborative research program that includes clinical trials and aligns with institutional and School priorities.

Service & Community Engagement -

• Advance the school's mission to serve the community through collaborative outreach with the Associate Dean of Community Engagement and the Associate Dean for Corporate and Alumni Affairs.

Required Qualifications -

• DDS/DMD (or equivalent) and completion of a CODA-accredited advanced education program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
• Board certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).
• Demonstrated record of excellence in clinical practice, education, scholarship, and academic leadership within Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
• Sustained scholarly productivity and evidence of contributions to the advancement of the specialty.
• Academic credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor with Tenure.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in an academic or comparable healthcare environment, including at least 5 years of progressively responsible leadership or supervisory experience.
• Eligibility for dental licensure in the State of Texas and ability to obtain and maintain all clinical credentials necessary for the position.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop faculty, residents, and academic programs.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and collaborative leadership skills.
• Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, clinical operations, financial stewardship, and resource management in an academic healthcare setting.

Preferred Qualifications -

• Demonstrated experience leading or advancing an academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department, division, residency program, or other complex clinical and educational enterprise.
• Experience fostering interdisciplinary, clinical, translational, and/or collaborative research.
• Demonstrated excellence in mentoring and developing faculty, residents, and students within an academic dental or health science environment.
• Experience supporting the recruitment, retention, and professional development of high-performing faculty.
• Experience with CODA accreditation and accreditation processes applicable to advanced education programs in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
• Record of leadership and service within professional organizations related to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or academic dentistry.
