Position Title: Academic Dean
Department: Business, Mathematics, and Technology
Employment type: full-time, 12-month, administrative professional
Work Schedule: PVCC's standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. These hours may be modified in the summer at the college's discretion. This is a full-time (non-exempt) position providing in-person services to students at college and community locations.
Position Purpose:
The academic dean serves as a visionary leader for the teaching and learning process in all disciplines and curricular programs in the Division and will shape the division's growth, future, and success. This position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Workforce Development. The successful candidate will develop, organize, plan, implement, supervise and evaluate the schedule of course offerings and curricular programs within the Division. The Division of Business, Mathematics, and Technology includes 24 degree and certificate programs including Business Administration, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Culinary, Engineering, Foundations of Criminal Justice, Information Systems Technology, and Management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program and Curriculum Development and Oversight
• Leads the planning, development, and evaluation of the division's course offerings and curricular programs.
• Provides direction and support to faculty in developing, revising, and evaluating division program curricula, courses, and materials.
• Collaborates with faculty to review curricula, learning outcomes, ongoing assessment results, and current research as a basis for improving instructional offerings and outcomes.
Cross-Division and College-Wide Collaboration
• Collaborates with academic deans, the Senior Director of Library and Academic Support, the Director of Dual Enrollment, the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, the Higher Education Prison Coordinator, the Director of the Thomas Jefferson Adult Continuing Education Center, Director of Educational Technology and Instructional Design, and others who directly support academic affairs and workforce development programs, faculty, and staff.
• Collaborates with the workforce development division on curriculum integration.
• Collaborates with the Foundation and Grants Office to develop and manage grants and identify funding opportunities for division programs and initiatives.
• Collaborates with Student Affairs staff and division faculty to develop strategies that support underrepresented and marginalized student populations.
Faculty and Staff Leadership
• Oversees recruitment, appointment, orientation, assignment, and evaluation of full-time faculty and support personnel.
• Collaborates with department chairs to oversee class schedule development and adjunct faculty, including dual-enrollment and prison education faculty.
• Fosters a collaborative and inclusive working environment that encourages professional development and innovation.
Student Success and Community Engagement
• Strengthens the quality of teaching and the learning environment to promote student achievement and retention.
• Develops partnerships with businesses, K-12 schools, universities, and community organizations.
• Works with and supports dual enrollment faculty liaisons in the division.
• Advocates for students by addressing their diverse academic and professional needs.
Resource Management and Grant Oversight
• Prepares and manages the division budget, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources.
• Seeks and manages private, state, and federal grants, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
Strategic and Annual Planning
• Leads the division in developing and supporting initiatives that align with PVCC's strategic plan, mission, and goals.
• Collaborates with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, department chairs, and division faculty in developing the division's annual plans.
Enrollment Management
• Collaborates with the Offices of Marketing and Media Relations and the Outreach and Admissions Office to develop and oversee the implementation of marketing and outreach efforts for division programs.
• Collaborates with the academic deans and department chairs to lead enrollment and retention strategies, including using Navigate or other technology solutions.
Technology Integration
• Collaborates with the Office of Information Technology to oversee the maintenance and upgrading of instructional equipment and resources.
Institutional Service and Leadership
• Represents the division on internal and external councils, committees, and task forces, including those in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
• Stays informed of new trends and innovations in community colleges and higher education to ensure the division remains competitive and relevant.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
• Master's degree from an accredited institution and credentialed to teach in a discipline represented in the division.
• Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy.
• Three or more years of community college teaching experience in an area represented in the division and/or related work experience.
• Knowledge of state and national issues pertaining to higher education, administrative experience, with demonstrated leadership and management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to develop courses and curricula in response to identified needs.
• Proven ability to work as a team player and to build a highly effective working team
• Demonstrated skill in managing budgets, equipment, and other institutional resources.
• Ability to provide leadership for business or technology accreditation, certification, or licensing requirements.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
Additional Considerations
• Doctorate from an accredited institution in higher education administration or a related field, or in a discipline represented in the Division
• Three or more years of progressive experience in administration, program, and/or curriculum development.
• Knowledge of community college curricula, instructional practices, and learning outcomes across disciplines within the Division
• Experience leading faculty and staff in a higher education setting
• Experience managing grants and preparing required reports
• Experience with developing transfer, career, and technical educational programs and services
• Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with local businesses, community groups, and other external organizations
