Database Administrator Remote (Eventually onsite)
Description:Diversified Systems is searching for a Database Administrator to provide advanced database administration, performance optimization, high availability, disaster recovery, security, and Azure database support for enterprise database environments. This position is responsible for implementing, configuring, maintaining, monitoring, and securing Microsoft SQL Server platforms across on-premises and Azure environments while ensuring database performance, availability, scalability, and compliance.
The successful candidate will collaborate with development teams, IT architects, security personnel, and business stakeholders to support database infrastructure, application lifecycle activities, cloud modernization efforts, and enterprise data management initiatives.
Responsibilities:Database Maintenance & ConfigurationInstall, configure, patch, and upgrade SQL Server instances across production, staging, and development environments.
Manage server storage, system databases, and data file structures.
Develop and orchestrate Azure and on-premises DBMS architectures to ensure scalable and resilient solutions.
Administer Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines.
Implement and configure DBMS platforms aligned with organizational requirements.
Performance Monitoring & TuningProactively monitor system health, resource allocation, and database performance metrics.
Optimize database performance through index tuning, query optimization, and resolution of blocking and deadlock issues.
Monitor and fine-tune DBMS performance to improve efficiency and reliability.
Perform performance tuning and system configuration across multiple database platforms.
Provide Tier III support for complex database issues and performance challenges.
Backup & Disaster RecoveryDesign, test, and execute database backup and recovery strategies.
Implement and support High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions including Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Failover Cluster Instances, and replication technologies.
Design and plan comprehensive HA/DR strategies.
Configure and deploy HA/DR environments and manage database replication processes.
Configure and support Azure database backup, recovery, security, monitoring, and migration solutions.
Participate in Disaster Recovery and Business Resumption activities as assigned.
Security & ComplianceImplement strict role-based access controls (RBAC).
Manage database user accounts, logins, and permissions.
Configure encryption for data at rest and in transit.
Work closely with the State Chief Information Security Officer to implement and enforce security standards.
Support database security, compliance, integrity, and access management initiatives.
Utilize Azure Key Vault to securely manage credentials and sensitive information.
Developer Support & Database DesignAssist development teams with schema design, table structures, data type selection, and database architecture decisions.
Review stored procedures, triggers, functions, and complex T-SQL code for performance and maintainability.
Collaborate with development teams throughout the application lifecycle, including planning, design, development, implementation, data migration, quality assurance, and data administration.
Support data exchange standards and secure data architecture practices.
Automation & ScriptingDevelop T-SQL, PowerShell, and command-line scripts to automate maintenance activities including backups, monitoring, integrity checks, statistics updates, reporting, and index management.
Azure & Enterprise Data Services
Configure and support Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Backup, Azure RBAC, and Azure database services.
Support migration and integration efforts between on-premises SQL Server and Azure database platforms.
Design database strategies supporting business objectives and enterprise modernization initiatives.
Contribute to business case development and solution architecture planning.
Documentation & LeadershipCreate and maintain documentation covering installations, configurations, monitoring, security standards, migrations, backup procedures, and operational best practices.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to peers and junior team members.
Collaborate with IT Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, and Development teams to deliver database solutions.
Requirements:- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, a related technical field, or equivalent work experience required.
5 years of hands-on experience managing enterprise Microsoft SQL Server database environments required.
5 years of performance monitoring and tuning experience required.
5 years of experience implementing security controls including role-based access control (RBAC) required.
5 years of experience supporting developers through schema reviews, database design, and code reviews required.
5 years of experience supporting enterprise-level SQL Server environments, including both on-premises and Azure platforms required.
Deep expertise in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and SQL Server internals required.
Advanced proficiency with Transact-SQL (T-SQL) required.
Experience implementing SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages and ETL workflows required.
Experience supporting Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines required.
Knowledge of Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, Azure Backup, and Azure role-based access control required.
Experience migrating and integrating databases between on-premises SQL Server and Azure environments required.
Understanding of Azure database security, networking, scalability, cost optimization, and HA/DR capabilities required.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills required.
Highly Desired Skills: - Hands-on experience with third-party monitoring and backup tools such as Redgate highly desired.
- Experience serving on Disaster Recovery, Incident Response, or Business Continuity teams highly desired.
