Data Integration EngineerUtility Operations
You will work in a small delivery team, report to the CEO, and collaborate directly with analysts, engineers and operational users. The role combines practical development, data reconciliation and independent execution within agreed scope.
Employment: Full-Time Employment Location: Downtown Los Angeles, CA
What you will own- Translate operational questions into a bounded delivery plan with sources, target outputs, business rules, acceptance checks, dependencies and an estimate.
- Diagnose inherited spreadsheets, scripts and workflows. Map dependencies and failure points, preserve required behavior and make one improvement at a time where appropriate.
- Write and maintain SQL, Python and Excel or Power Query transformations. Map fields, match identifiers and reconcile input to output across disconnected datasets.
- Connect approved systems using APIs, database connections or automated file transfers. Handle authentication, schema changes, retries, duplicate delivery and partial failures.
- Expose missing, invalid, conflicting, stale or misidentified data. Maintain mappings, data definitions, exception records and traceable approved resolutions.
- Use version control, review, meaningful tests and monitoring. Maintain reproducible environments, protected configuration and safe rerun and recovery procedures.
- Document setup, dependencies, checks and operating instructions. Demonstrate that another colleague can run and support the work.
- Ask precise questions, explain limitations, raise scope and capacity risks early, and measure operational value. Coordinate changes with Engineering, Operations and IT.
Engineering judgments, security and infrastructure approvals, live equipment changes and commercial commitments remain with their designated owners. Support hours, priorities and concurrent assignments are agreed for the work.
What you must bring - At least five years of relevant professional experience in data integration, workflow automation, data engineering or software delivery, including recent hands-on development.
- Strong SQL, including joins, type handling, nulls, duplicate detection and validation. Advanced Excel with repeatable Power Query transformations or an equivalent tool.
- Practical Python: read, debug, modify and test existing Python workflows, including code you did not write. Other scripting languages are valuable additions.
- Practical API or systems integration, including authentication, schema or data contract concepts, failure handling and source-to-target reconciliation.
- Personal delivery of at least two operational integrations or automations, including an inherited workflow you improved and supported. Explain your contribution, checks and result.
- Git or equivalent version control, reproducible setup, controlled changes and documentation another person has successfully used.
- Independent execution of scoped work, reliable follow-through, respectful teamwork and a constructive response to review. Maintain existing tools willingly and escalate unresolved rules early.
A relevant degree is useful; equivalent demonstrated professional experience is equally relevant. The experience minimum applies overall, not separately to every tool.
Experience that strengthens your application IoT and telemetry experience is a valued differentiator. Show how you connected or supported device data, handled asset identity, timestamps, units or freshness, and helped an operator make a useful decision. Lack of this experience does not disqualify an otherwise qualified candidate.
Other useful experience includes utility or regulated work; materials, supply chain or asset data; SAP, Maximo or GIS; Power BI, Power Apps or SharePoint; PDF/OCR; cloud or containers; and Jira workflow configuration. Track requirements and exceptions reliably; a specific tracking platform is not a hiring gate.
Early success and selection By day 30, independently operate one selected existing workflow with accepted checks and recovery instructions. By day 60, operate a second workflow and complete a tested handover. By day 90, demonstrate a measured operational improvement. These milestones use bounded assignments with required access and reviewer support.
Provide a résumé and two brief examples of work you personally delivered. Use sanitized examples or descriptions and protect employer-confidential information. Finalists complete a paid, time-limited exercise and a live review. Agreed Pacific-time collaboration is required. Reasonable adjustments to the selection process are available.
