Full Job Description
The Institutional Securities Group (ISG) has established the ISG Data Group (IDG) to provide a single point of accountability for the full spectrum of data-related commercial initiatives. These initiatives span the defensive aspects of data management, including data security and risk reduction, as well as opportunities to drive operational efficiency through improved data quality and enhanced revenue generation by leveraging data assets to deliver value-added services to clients.

The ISG Divisional Data Office (DDO), which sits within IDG, is responsible for the oversight, governance, and integrity of data used for senior management reporting, regulatory reporting, client reporting, and key internal controls. Using a risk-based prioritization framework, the team partners with business and control functions to identify critical data elements and implement enhancements to controls that ensure the quality, accuracy, and integrity of that data.

Position Description

Morgan Stanley is seeking a Vice President to join the ISG Divisional Data Office team. The successful candidate will partner with stakeholders across the business to assess and execute strategic data initiatives, evaluate front-office processes and their associated control frameworks, identify control gaps, and define remediation plans. The role will also oversee data issue management and support the development and presentation of metrics related to data governance, data quality, and policy implementation.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain Data Management standards across ISG, focusing on data definitions, data ownership, data quality rules, control frameworks, and industry best practices in data governance and management.
  • Build subject matter expertise in key data governance processes, controls, and regulatory expectations.
  • Understand and apply Data Policy requirements to ensure appropriate cataloging and documentation of data initiatives and projects.
  • Analyze relationships between data entities and perform basic data modeling to support data cataloging and governance activities.
  • Evaluate the control environment, support control documentation efforts, and map controls to critical data elements.
  • Assess data quality requirements, identify control gaps, and challenge stakeholders on fitness-for-purpose standards where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with business, technology, and control partners to execute data initiatives and establish consistent data definitions and standards.
  • Assess and prioritize data issues based on risk, perform root cause analysis, conduct thematic reviews, and drive remediation or risk-acceptance decisions for significant data issues.
  • Prepare and present updates, metrics, and reporting on data policy implementation, data issue management, governance initiatives, and escalation items to senior management and Data Governance Committees.
  • Track project milestones and deliverables, provide status updates to senior management, and proactively identify risks, dependencies, and potential impacts to timelines.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience within the financial services industry.
  • Strong understanding of financial products, asset classes, and risk measures.
  • Knowledge of the trade lifecycle and front-to-back (F2B) data lineage and data flows.
  • Experience in a Data Management, Data Governance, or Data Quality role, with a focus on data definitions, ownership, quality controls, and governance frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of Data Governance and Data Management principles and best practices.
  • Strong analytical and data investigation skills, with the ability to identify trends, anomalies, inconsistencies, and control weaknesses.
  • Demonstrated risk and control mindset with the ability to challenge assumptions and enhance processes.
  • Ability to synthesize and present complex information in a clear and meaningful manner.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively across business, technology, and control functions.
  • Highly motivated, delivery-focused, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with the ability to independently drive initiatives to completion.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, including experience influencing senior stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to ask thoughtful, challenging questions at the appropriate time.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic data modeling experience preferred.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $140,000 and $250,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
