Compensation: $118,000-$130,000 per year

This role will be on-site in our Sacramento Office.

Job Overview

The Data Engineer will design, evolve, and govern the data architecture supporting the organization's internally developed application systems. This position will own the architecture of existing operational databases, develop scalable data models and pipelines, and evaluate the transition of appropriate data assets into a data warehouse. Working closely with the dedicated Integrations Engineer and other technology teams, the Data Engineer will provide architectural direction that aligns application, integration, analytics, reliability, and reporting needs.

Roles & Responsibilities

Architecture & Implementation Ownership:

• Define and own the data architecture and implementation approach for internally developed application systems and business intelligence solutions, applying appropriate database technologies, data platforms, modeling techniques, and architectural patterns.
• Ensure completeness and compatibility of the technical infrastructure to support system performance, availability, and architecture requirements.
• Define the target-state architecture and migration roadmap for internal application databases and a potential data warehouse, including the separation of operational and analytical workloads.
• Establish/maintain standards for schema design, normalization and denormalization, indexing, query performance, data retention, lineage, metadata, security, backup, recovery, and database change management.

Integration Team Partnership:

• Partner with the dedicated Integrations Engineer to define data contracts, source-of-truth ownership, integration patterns, schema-change practices, and architectural boundaries between application databases and integration services.
• Design, build, test, document, and monitor reliable batch and event-driven data pipelines using SQL, PostgreSQL, Python, and other approved platform technologies.
• Interface with other technology teams to extract, transform, and load data from a wide variety of data sources.

Operational Support:

• Advise product owners, program managers, developers, and internal technology leaders on database, data-modeling, pipeline, and data-platform decisions, documenting recommendations, tradeoffs, and risks.
• Continually improve ongoing reporting and analysis processes, automating or simplifying self-service support for customers.

Education and/ or Experience

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, statistics, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

5+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, database engineering, data architecture, business intelligence engineering, or a related discipline, including substantial responsibility for production database design and data pipelines.

Advanced experience designing relational data models and writing, reviewing, and tuning complex SQL queries for production workloads and large data sets.

Strong experience using Python or a comparable programming language to develop data pipelines, automation, validation, and operational tooling.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A valid driver's license may be required for this position based on business needs. Employees required to drive as part of their job duties must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and meet company driving eligibility requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated strength in relational and dimensional data modeling, ETL and ELT design, data warehousing, data marts, and the separation of operational and analytical workloads.

Strong experience with PostgreSQL and relational database architecture; experience with SQL Server, Amazon Redshift, or comparable analytical platforms is preferred.

Experience designing data solutions on AWS using relevant managed database, storage, compute, integration, monitoring, security, and analytics services.

Ability to evaluate alternatives, document architecture decisions, explain technical tradeoffs to technical and nontechnical stakeholders, and influence implementation without direct supervisory authority.

Knowledge of distributed systems as it pertains to data storage and computing.
