Data Engineer
As a data engineer, you will be part of a diverse team that is collaborating to grow and mature adaptive and additive manufacturing supply chains. The America Makes Institute views data and data sharing as a key component to communicating the outcomes and impacts of our efforts. Data is critical to the value of the Institute in its mission to accelerate the maturation of adaptive and additive manufacturing technologies. The data engineer will lead the integration, structuring, and intuitive hosting of project data within the America Makes data repository called CORE.
The Institute currently executes over 200 active projects. Many of these efforts will deliver various forms of manufacturing data including design data, processing data, materials data, inspection data, testing data, reports, and presentations. The data engineer will ensure that operational processes of integrating data and data architectures conveying the interconnectivity of data within CORE maintain the integrity of the actions of the Institute and that information is searchable and reusable. The data engineer is responsible for setting strategy and prioritizing actions which achieves a user-friendly experience for those accessing CORE and ensures CORE data quality and reuse.
Responsibilities of the role include:
- Understand, develop, and continuously improve data management principles and common practices for the America Makes program
- Facilitate integration, structuring, and storage of project data within the America Makes data repository, CORE
- Identify and address data management capability gaps, deliver methods and approaches which enhance data quality and ensure reuse, and manage a strategy for continuous process improvement for America Makes data management and persistence
- Strong awareness of existing state of the art in data pedigree, data structures, essential variables (provenance and essential components of defining a manufacturing workflow), and data models for advanced manufacturing technologies
- Manage the quality and reuse of America Makes data assets
On a typical day, you might:
- Facilitate meetings, workshops, panel discussions
- Document technical details, aggregate information, analyze data, draw conclusions, identify trends, and summarize information
- Support or lead the drafting of manuscripts, reports, and presentations
- Present programmatic and technical information
- Develop, share, and follow instructions/procedures
- Lead group discussions with project teams and America Makes members
- Develop plans/schedules which establish time-based programmatic and/or professional development goals
- Serve as an individual contributor or provide consultation as a subject matter expert
About our ideal candidate:
- 5-10 years of relevant experience in developing and managing manufacturing data pipelines, data management practices, and database architectures
- Strong time management skills - be willing to make a plan, stick to it, and communicate changes effectively
- Ability to lead discussions if or when necessary - recognize you and your voice matter, we get there as a team
- Willingness to ask questions when matters are unfamiliar, unknown, or unclear - recognizing everyone's understanding is important
- Willingness to seek feedback and address challenges or matters which are unclear - we operate in an environment where even when we believe we understand; there is much to still learn
- Strong communication skills concerning the following: project plans, work breakdown structures, risk, and technical details
- Great note taker or ability to retain knowledge quickly
- A desire to keep team members (internal and external) informed of plans, logic, and goals - we will get there together
- Candidates who exhibit a service mentally are most likely to succeed and quickly become leaders and/or critical team members in this role
- Candidates who are able to think strategically and execute tasks systematically to plan are most suitable for this role - how to establish priority, operate intentionally (be strategic), and execute to plan is very important
