Design components and systems for large-scale 2 Kelvin and 4 Kelvin helium refrigeration and distribution systems, under the supervision of experienced engineering staff members. Provide mechanical engineering support to the Jefferson Lab cryogenic plants as needed.
In this job you will:- Perform mechanical design of cryogenic components and systems for the EIC project, including cryostats, cold boxes, vacuum systems, transfer lines, and utility piping. Provide technical direction to designers producing models and drawings.
- Perform engineering analysis of designs, including stress, thermal, and fluid analysis. Apply pressure vessel and piping design practices and ASME codes, and prepare analysis documentation for design review.
- Prepare component specifications and procurement documents. Assist with vendor reviews, fabrication, inspection, and installation of EIC project hardware. Participate, under senior staff direction, in collaboration with other National Labs.
- Collaborate with Cryo department designers, technicians, and process engineers to integrate mechanical designs with process requirements. Attend group activities, such as project meetings, design reviews, and cryo-plant training.
- Provide mechanical engineering support to the operational cryogenic plants at Jefferson Lab as needed, such as component repair, replacement, and improvement designs.
Additional Responsibilities- Serve in the cryogenic on-call rotation as scheduled, initially shadowing a qualified on-call coordinator, then serving as on-call coordinator after demonstrating competency in the role.
- May participate in off-normal cryogenic plant operation to learn and implement the lessons learned in the design work.
Experience- Preferred: Mechanical design experience with 3D CAD
Education- Required: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering
Experience and Education ExchangeEducation above the minimum may be substituted for experience. Relevant experience may not be substituted for education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Solid technical foundation in stress analysis, material sciences, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, and the ability to apply it to unfamiliar cryogenic systems.
- Ability to read, interpret, and provide feedback on engineering drawings and 3D CAD models.
- Good communication skills and ability to interact with other engineers, designers, technicians, and procurement personnel.
- Knowledge in cryogenics, vacuum systems, pressure vessel and piping design to ASME codes, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
