The Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) Emergency Department (ED) provides 24-hour, physician-led emergency care to patients requiring immediate or urgent assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for a wide range of injuries and illnesses. The ED is supported by a skilled interdisciplinary team of nurses and allied health professionals, with access to specialty consultation as required and coordinated transfers to tertiary care centres when needed.

To support timely access to care and respond to emergency department wait times, seasonal patient volume surges, and challenges in accessing primary care in the Kenora region, LWDH introduced a Nurse Practitioner (NP) Service in 2023 as an extension of the ED. All patients presenting to the ED undergo comprehensive triage by experienced nursing staff using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS). Patients assessed as lower acuity (CTAS 4 or 5) may be directed to the NP Service, allowing for efficient care delivery while supporting patient flow and resource optimization across the department.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at LWDH provides specialized, 24-hour care to critically ill patients requiring close monitoring and advanced clinical interventions. The unit consists of four fully monitored ICU beds, with the capacity to remotely cardiac monitor an additional four patients on the ward through telemetry.

The ICU cares for critically ill cardiac, medical, and surgical patients, including individuals requiring short-term ventilatory support. Registered Nurses in the ICU work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to deliver high-acuity, evidence-informed care in a fast-paced and highly specialized environment, supporting patient stabilization, recovery, and safe transitions in care.
