Full Job Description
As a Coverage Attorney at Kinsale, you'll take ownership of all aspects of the coverage litigation process - from analyzing complex coverage issues to working alongside senior management on claims handling best practices. You'll collaborate closely with outside counsel, engage in mediations and trials, and serve as a key advisor as the legal landscape evolves. This is a high-impact role for a sharp, detail-oriented attorney who thrives in a fast-paced, analytically driven environment.

What You'll Do
  • Overseeing all aspects of the coverage litigation process, including analyzing coverage issues and determining exposure across all levels of litigation.
  • Evaluating claims handling and underwriting practices to identify risk and support sound coverage positions.
  • Working closely with outside counsel to draft pleadings and motions consistent with Kinsale's coverage positions and proprietary policy forms.
  • Reviewing and responding to subpoenas and complaints filed with state insurance departments.
  • Participating in mediations, arbitrations, and trials, with travel as needed.
  • Preparing comprehensive coverage position papers that account for venue and claims handling practices.
  • Communicating effectively with agents, brokers, and attorneys - both orally and in writing.
  • Partnering with senior management to identify best practices and advise on responses to changes in the legal environment.

What You Bring
  • J.D. degree and a four-year college degree.
  • Active admission to practice law in at least one state.
  • Superior writing skills, with demonstrated ability to draft claim correspondence, coverage positions, and litigation pleadings.
  • Strong analytical ability to interpret state laws, regulations, and case law related to insurance coverage and claims handling.
  • Background in litigation, preferably involving insurance claims and coverage matters.
  • Experience in the commercial property and casualty insurance industry, preferably in the excess and surplus lines market.
  • Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and a collaborative mindset.
