Overview

Under the general direction of the CFO, the controller is primarily responsible for preparing financial statements and reports for all corporate entities. The controller is also responsible for managing and controlling the general accounting, payroll, and accounts payable sections. The controller will successfully manage the department ensuring that procedures are followed and internal controls are in place.

The controller also must:Be able to direct, control, and supervise the activities of the general accounting department, including payroll and accounts payable.Possess technical and professional accounting skills, the ability to develop financial and other operational systems, and familiarity with data processing and personal computer capabilities and procedures.Be able to schedule, meet, and maintain daily and monthly routines, assign personnel, and maintain the integrity of records.Oversee the activities of the Accounting/Payroll department for accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including but not limited to internal and external monthly financial statements.Plan and coordinate the development of the annual operating and capital budget, as well as plan, coordinate and prepare for the year-end external audit by the Public Accounting Firm.

 

Responsibilities

1. Supervises and trains all employees under his or her supervision as reflected in the organizational chart.

2. Plans and coordinates the activities of the general accounting, payroll and accounts payable staff, and ensures that activities correspond to divisional priorities. Assigns projects and maintains schedules for their completion.

3. Evaluates existing procedures for recording financial transactions to determine methods of reducing the time and cost of the accounting operation.

4. Prepares and reviews financial reports for accuracy before release in a timely manner. Performs month-end close.

5. Prepares and reviews journal entries, reconciliations, and analysis for accuracy and compliance with established accounting procedures and policies. Monitors revenue and expense activities.

6. Reviews payroll and accounts payable sections to ensure that appropriate control procedures have been established and are being followed.

7. Plans, coordinates, and prepares the annual operating and capital budget, all internal and external audits, and quarterly OSHPD reports.

8. Ensures that an up-to-date procedure manual is developed and maintained so that staff can be properly guided.

9. Reviews, interprets and analyzes financial data for the CFO, management and department heads.  Works cooperatively with other management team members to support the hospital wide team efforts and initiatives.

10. Assigns projects and maintains follow-up to ensure timely preparation of all reports within the area of responsibility and reviews completed reports for accuracy and reasonableness before submission.

11. Develops systems/reporting to monitor department operations so that an assessment of the quality and quantity of output can be reviewed at random.

12. Implements a development plan for staff to ensure performance objectives are met and employees are being developed for promotional opportunities.

13. Consults, advises, and answers routine questions and problems raised by staff.

14. Selects, orients, trains, schedules, assigns, directs and supervises department personnel.  Evaluates work performance and initiates or recommends personnel actions such as merit increases, promotions, demotions, transfers, disciplinary action, and/or termination. Takes corrective action when warranted.

15. Is responsible for the department’s operational excellence and ensures that the department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.

16. Manages human resources (HR) to ensure quality services and promote positive employee relations.

17. Is responsible for the fiscal management of the department and ensures the proper utilization of the organization’s financial resources.

18. Effectively communicates department, organization, and industry information to staff.

19. Attains all agreed to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission.

20. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific jobrelated hazards.

21. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

22. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

23. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter-and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting preferred.

 

Minimum Work Experience Five to seven years of accounting experience is preferred, of which three years should be in a supervisory position. Two to three years of directly related experience in the healthcare field or in the public accounting field performing audits is highly desirable. Experience in a multi-corporate organization with in-house computer systems is preferred.Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Oral and written communication ability sufficient to train and supervise staff and interact with other departments. Excellent analytical, prioritization and problem-solving abilities. Advanced Excel knowledge and strong word processing skills required. PowerPoint skills preferred. Excellent organizational, communication, and judgment skills. Ability to deal with other departments to resolve problems and ensure accurate scheduling and financial information. Be of sound character.
