Overview

About the Role

The primary purpose of the Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Investigational Drug Services position is to assure proper handling and storage of investigational drugs is maintained in accordance with sponsor requirements, hospital policy, TJC, State and Federal standards, rules, and regulations. Organizes, leads, directs, and verifies the duties and functions performed by supportive personnel to ensure the provision of accurate, efficient, and appropriate Investigational Drug distribution services to the patient. Serves patients' age and population as described below.

  • Reviews all Investigational Drug Services (IDS) protocols and prepares clinical data sheets and proper policies and procedures for handling and control of investigational drugs; maintains an accurate descriptive listing of all open drug trials at University Hospital; reviews and assumes responsibility for accurate accountability of logs for all investigational drugs.
  • Responsible for complete and accurate record keeping of all investigational drugs received, stored, and dispensed according to requirements, including invoicing departments utilizing investigational drug services and ensuring proper payment is received.
  • Responsible for the preparation, proper labeling, distribution, and interpretation of medication orders; informs physicians of any errors, omissions, or discrepancies and suggests appropriate or alternate medication therapy based on evaluation of the patient's condition.
  • Responsible for training, overseeing, educating, and checking the work of supportive personnel and students; establishes methods for staff development and education; conducts in-service education lectures and provides patient education/counseling upon request.
  • Responsible for the daily coordination of the compounding and distribution of sterile and non-sterile products in accordance with USP , , and guidelines; responsible for the development, preparation, and compounding of special dosage forms not commercially available.
  • Responsible for the distribution, control, and record keeping of all controlled substances; maintains quality control standards through MUE, QA, and other programs; responsible for inventory control/purchasing activity; identifies, evaluates, and improves the quality of Investigational Drug Service provided by the Department of Pharmacy.
  • Assumes charge pharmacist responsibilities as required; attends IRB meetings, educational programs, initiation meetings, and coordinates services with study monitor; reviews ADE and Med Watch reports; maintains intradepartmental communication; pursues continuing education; understands and adheres to compliance standards, regulations, laws, policies, and performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or Pharm D. degree in pharmacy from an accredited institution required. Post graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a registered pharmacist practicing in a hospital or industry setting.
  • Experience in handling investigational drugs may substitute the experience as a registered pharmacist.
  • Experience working in a hospital preferred. IRB experience preferred.
  • Must be licensed with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacist.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

The expected salary range for this position is Min $129,497. - Mid $157,165 - Max $ 188,507 per year, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
