Details Position Summary:We seek a skilled and knowledgeable colleague to join our team in conducting clinical consultations and providing guidance to enhance the ethical climate of our institution. Candidates should demonstrate success in providing high-quality clinical ethics consultation, ethics education, and policy development in both clinical and academic settings. This is a full-time position, and the majority of work will be conducted in-person at University of Utah hospitals, clinics, and campuses in and near Salt Lake City, UT.
The clinical ethicist will join the Clinic Ethics Consultation Program, which is housed in the University of Utah Center for Health Ethics, Arts, and Humanities. The Center connects scholars and clinicians across campus, with strong ties to the S. J. Quinney College of Law, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, and Department of Philosophy. The Center supports robust education, research, and clinical work in bioethics and the arts and humanities as they intersect with healthcare. The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine will be the candidate's academic home.
Responsibilities:The clinical ethicist will independently conduct ethics consultations, document consultations in the electronic health record, and provide embedded ethics support to critical care units within the hospital. The clinical ethicist must be comfortable operating in the clinical context, including engaging directly with care providers, professional staff, patients, and families. The clinical ethicist will collaborate with other members of the clinical ethics program to ensure the delivery of high-quality ethics consultation services. Faculty track will be dependent upon qualifications.
Minimum Requirements:- Terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD, DO or equivalent) in Bioethics, Nursing, Medicine, Law, or related field (e.g., Divinity, Social Work), with preference for those with advanced degrees in clinical ethics or related field.
- At least three years of experience providing ethics consultations in a healthcare environment.
- If hired on the Clinical Track, board eligibility or HEC-C certification eligibility is required.
Preferences:- Formal fellowship training in clinical ethics and/or other advanced training in bioethics.
- Board Certification or Certification through Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified Program (HEC-C).
Reporting Relationship:This position will report directly to the Director of the Center for Health Ethics, Arts, and Humanities, the Chair of the Health Sciences Education Deans Council for University of Utah Health, and the Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine.
