Job Description
HII is seeking a skilled and motivated Sr. Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain critical simulation translation software components to integrate with US Department of War (DoW) Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) Global Reusable Interface Domain (GRID) based simulation systems. This role is executed primarily in HII and partner facilities in the Patuxent River, MD, area. The candidate will leverage their expertise in C++ and Java, along with strong design skills, to enhance the functionality of HII Simulation Performance Data Engine (SPDE) translators to support JSE integration with other simulation protocols, such as Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) and High-Level Architecture (HLA). This role requires a solid understanding of software architecture and development best practices and the ability to work independently on-site while working as part of a remote software development team.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Developing software for an advanced synthetic training environment. This software will integrate with JSE GRID-based flight simulators and related components to support pilot training against potential threats. Support software development, software integration, customer training and demonstrations.
• Design, develop, document, test, and debug C++ and Java simulation protocol translation software in Linux.
• Use distributed modeling and simulation protocol specifications (DIS, GRID, HLA) to derive requirements, create software designs, and perform verification/validation.
• Integrate, troubleshoot, and maintain translation software to facilitate interoperability with GRID-based systems in a JSE simulation laboratory environment.
• Support software architecture development and documentation.
• Work independently on-site while collaborating with a remote team, determining and developing effective solutions with minimal supervision.
• Create technical documentation, including design specifications, installation procedures, and end-user guides.
• Evaluate and review C++ and Java code, ensuring high-quality, scalable, and maintainable designs.
• Develop multi-threaded or parallel-processing components and inter-process communication solutions.
• Use Git for daily development, including branching, merging, pull requests, and resolving conflicts.
• Work in Linux (Bash) and Windows environments; interact with remote repositories and CI/CD infrastructure.
• Collaborate with other engineers and system architects to design new capabilities and support integration of SPDE translators into the JSE environment.
• Participate in software testing, debugging, documentation, and customer demonstrations.
• Support training, troubleshooting, and operational use of translation software and JSE components alongside government personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
• 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
• Experience with object-oriented software design and development of multi-threaded applications, particularly in C++ and Java.
• Experience with software development in a Linux environment (Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux).
• Proficiency working in a Linux command-line environment (Bash).
• Experience working with Git version control system, including branching, merging, and conflict resolution.
• Knowledge of best practices for the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Able to successfully manage competing tasks and priorities.
• Strong oral and written communication, troubleshooting, and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a remote distributed team environment.
• Current or active (or interim) Secret clearance, with ability to obtain and maintain a DoW Top Secret clearance.
• Must be a US citizen.
Preferred Requirements
• Active Top Secret/SCI clearance.
• Experience developing software for DoW distributed simulations.
• Experience with NGTS, GRID, DIADS, ART, WSCE, FIAB, VATS, or related simulation frameworks.
• Experience with scripting in shell and/or Python.
• Experience working with C++-focused IDEs such as VSCode or Clion, and Java-focused IDEs such as IntelliJ or Eclipse.
• Experience contributing to the system design or architecture of new and current systems.
• Experience with Agile software practices.
• Experience supporting Special Access Program (SAP) efforts.
Physical Requirements
Adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements Software Engineer family.
