Your Opportunity

The role of a civil engineer is to work on smaller projects, and/or as a team member of a larger project under the guidance and supervision of a senior engineer/designer. You should be able to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer systems or products for a project. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include calculations, and field work. The smaller projects that a civil engineer may be assigned to will have relatively few complex features. A civil engineer will assist more senior engineers/designers by performing the routine aspects of civil engineering assignments. May assist in the analysis of proposed projects.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Supports project team in development of design documentation, plans and reports for relevant project design elements.
  • Assists in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Utilizes technologies in development of three-dimensional models of civil systems.
  • Prepares and revises documentation in various project phases.
  • Coordinates with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
  • Assists in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.
  • Assists with the development of job specific discipline specifications.
  • Assists in the evaluation and selection of civil systems and materials.
  • Attends project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
  • Participates in value engineering and cost estimating.
  • Implements sustainable design principles .
  • Performs calculations to analyze and design civil system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
  • Recreational improvements - multi-use trails, campgrounds, day-use areas, boat launches/ramps
  • Restoration - water quality, stream/riverine restoration
  • General Civil Engineering - stormwater improvements, general development
  • Transportation - Hydrologic, Hydraulic and Drainage design portions of larger projects
  • Hydroelectric relicensing - studies and engineering assessments to support Federal Energy Regulatory Commission licensing

Potential Project Assignments

Within the environmental services division of Stantec in the western US we work on a variety of projects throughout the region. The projects are engaging, satisfying, and typically are for betterment of the general public throughout the region. Projects are typically in remote settings of the Sierra Nevada, though some projects are in larger metropolitan areas. Example projects you may be engaged in, include the following types of projects:

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Working knowledge and application of the National, State and other pertinent codes relative to jurisdictions and developing jurisdictional experience and contacts..
  • Basic knowledge of civil systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Basic understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings, specifications and estimate.
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation..
  • Ability to check own work for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD Civil 3d.
  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team.
  • Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Working understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required).

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • 5 - 10 years of experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range:
• Locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, ME, NY, VA Areas-$93,600.00 - $135,700.00 Annually
• Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ, VA Areas-$103,000.00 - $149,300.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
