What is the Opportunity? As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon Nuclear has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation to support the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). Beginning in 2023, Aecon will support the validation phase, design, procurement, early site preparation and site mobilization scope for the construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
The Civil Construction Manager - Concrete is responsible for the planning, coordination and execution of major civil and structural concrete activities within a nuclear construction environment. The role provides leadership across field execution, subcontractor management, engineering coordination, quality, safety, scheduling and turnover.
The successful candidate will bring extensive experience delivering complex concrete scopes and will ensure work is executed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project drawings, specifications, quality requirements and construction schedules.
What You'll Do Here:- Lead the planning and execution of civil and structural concrete construction activities, including foundations, slabs, walls, equipment foundations and other major concrete structures.
- Provide overall leadership for concrete construction activities from pre-construction and constructability review through execution, inspection and turnover.
- Coordinate concrete activities including excavation interfaces, formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, anchor bolts, concrete placement, curing, finishing and testing.
- Review construction drawings, specifications and work packages to identify constructability concerns, sequencing requirements and potential field constraints.
- Work closely with Engineering to resolve technical issues, RFIs, drawing discrepancies and field conditions.
- Coordinate with Quality to ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable inspection and test plans, hold/witness points, inspection requirements and project quality documentation.
- Ensure required inspections and approvals are completed prior to concrete placement.
- Lead short- and medium-term construction planning, including look-ahead schedules, manpower requirements, equipment needs, material availability and subcontractor activities.
- Monitor field productivity and construction progress and proactively address issues that could impact project milestones.
- Manage and coordinate civil/concrete subcontractors, ensuring alignment with project expectations for safety, quality, schedule and performance.
- Coordinate concrete scopes with mechanical, electrical, structural and other construction disciplines to minimize field conflicts.
- Ensure appropriate controls are maintained for items such as reinforcing steel, embeds, penetrations, anchor bolts and dimensional tolerances.
- Support resolution of non-conformances and construction deficiencies in coordination with Quality and Engineering.
- Maintain strong field presence and promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability and procedural compliance.
- Support turnover and close-out activities, ensuring construction documentation is complete and deficiencies are addressed.
- Participate in construction meetings and provide updates regarding progress, risks, constraints and upcoming activities.
- Identify construction risks early and develop mitigation plans to protect safety, quality and schedule.
