We are seeking a full- or part-time Chief Traffic Engineer for our active and growing traffic engineering discipline. Our traffic team is dynamic, forward-thinking, and passionate about making a difference. For a candidate hired full-time, this position is eligible for a $10,000 signing bonus. This position may be considered for part-time hours for a well-qualified candidate.
A Day in the Life of the Chief Traffic Engineer
Here’s a snapshot of what you would do in this role:
- Quality Leadership:
- Lead QA/QC reviews of traffic simulation models, intersection and interchange design studies, engineering reports, and traffic signal/ITS design documents to support consistent standards across project teams.
- Monitor the quality and progress of traffic engineering tasks on active projects, ensuring production requirements and project expectations are met.
- Collaborate with project managers, senior technical staff, and other disciplines to execute significant projects across the country.
- Technical Oversight:
- Lead traffic and transportation engineering analysis and design tasks.
- Serve as a senior technical advisor and trusted partner to clients across markets.
- Help recruit, mentor, and develop traffic engineering staff across multiple office locations.
- Participate in the development of an internal and external professional development program.
- Client and Business Development Leadership:
- Help market Hanson’s traffic engineering expertise to clients, potential recruits, and professional organizations.
- Provide technical support for project proposals, presentations, and interviews.
- Assist in the development of project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
What We’re Looking For
The following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:
Required Skills:
- Traffic analysis of intersections, interchanges, and corridors using modeling software such as Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, and Vissim.
- Understanding of HSM, HCM, MUTCD, AASHTO Green Book, and PROWAG.
- Strong communication abilities, especially in explaining technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with geometric design of intersections and interchanges.
- CAD experience with Microstation/OpenRoads.
- Familiarity with travel demand modeling concepts, including experience with Visum, Cube, and/or TransCAD software, is desirable.
Work Environment:
- Occasional travel (typically 1–2 days/month) for visiting staff in other locations, client meetings, and site visits.

- Flexible full-time or part-time arrangements may be considered based on candidate qualifications and business needs.
Education/Experience:
- BS or MS in civil engineering or related degree.
- Typically 15+ years of traffic engineering and analysis experience.
- Current Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months of starting.
- IDOT and IL Tollway experience is preferred.
- PTOE certification is desirable.
Salary range: $150,000 – $190,000 per year. Salaries are based on years of experience, skills, and qualifications. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on individual and company performance.
