Position SummaryThe Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the Company's senior physician leader and a visible, client facing member of its executive team. The CMO oversees clinical quality and helps grow the Company's healthcare staffing and consulting services for Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities, Tribal 638 facilities, and Urban Indian Organizations (UIOs). Across these relationships, the CMO is responsible for patient safety, provider performance, strong client partnerships, strategic relationship development, and sustainable revenue growth.
This role combines practicing medicine with clinical leadership, executive leadership, strategic relationship development, and business development. In addition to traditional CMO responsibilities, the CMO is expected to serve as a senior ambassador for the Company within the Indian health and broader healthcare communities. The CMO will leverage established professional relationships and networks, develop new relationships with healthcare leaders and decision-makers, identify opportunities for the Company, facilitate introductions, and help convert relationships and market knowledge into qualified business opportunities.
The CMO helps clients solve workforce and care delivery challenges, assesses the clinical and commercial merits of new markets and opportunities, shapes staffing and consulting solutions, and helps win and successfully deliver new work. The CMO is expected to play an active role in originating and advancing business opportunities, expanding existing client relationships, and increasing the Company's visibility and credibility among prospective clients, partners, and other healthcare stakeholders.
The CMO must be a clinically credible physician, a rigorous steward of quality, an effective public speaker, a trusted partner to clients and providers, and an effective relationship-builder capable of contributing meaningfully to the Company's growth strategy. Success in the role will require the CMO to balance clinical leadership with proactive engagement in business development, strategic networking, client development, and revenue generation.
The CMO works closely with leaders in operations, recruiting, business development, and finance. Clinical oversight is exercised in coordination with each client's medical leadership, policies, credentialing and privileging processes, and applicable contractual responsibilities.
Essential ResponsibilitiesClinical quality, safety, and medical leadership- Establish clinical quality, patient safety, documentation, and professional practice expectations for services within the Company's scope of responsibility.
- Review quality indicators, chart audits, client feedback, and adverse events; identify trends, recommend corrective actions, and follow through on improvement plans with operations and client leadership.
- Assess clinical risks in current and prospective assignments, including provider fit, scope of practice, supervision, coverage, escalation pathways, and continuity of care; promptly elevate material concerns.
- Advise on clinical protocols, medical director services, care delivery workflows, and quality improvement projects suited to each client's setting.
- Support compliance with applicable clinical, credentialing, privileging, documentation, and patient safety requirements in partnership with internal and client teams.
- Serve as a clinical liaison and escalation resource for providers, clients, and Company leadership while respecting the authority and responsibilities of client medical staff and governing bodies.
- Monitor developments affecting the Company's services and provide practical guidance to providers and leadership.
Provider selection, support, and performance- Assess the clinical qualifications, judgment, communication skills, and suitability of physician and advanced practice provider candidates for specific assignments.
- Partner with recruiting and operations on workforce planning, interview criteria, onboarding, site readiness, and retention.
- Set clinical performance expectations; mentor providers and address performance concerns in coordination with operations, human resources, and client leadership.
- Help providers adapt to local workflows, community priorities, and models of care in IHS, Tribal, urban Indian, and rural health settings.
- Support provider development and peer learning, using feedback to improve quality and assignment stability.
Business development, client relationships, and revenue growth- Serve as a senior business development leader with meaningful responsibility for generating and advancing opportunities in the Company's target and adjacent healthcare markets.
- Develop and maintain relationships with current and prospective clients, Tribal health leaders, healthcare executives, medical directors, clinicians, community leaders, industry organizations, referral sources, and other stakeholders relevant to the Company's services. Cultivate relationships even when no immediate opportunity exists.
- Use existing professional networks and develop new relationships to understand clients workforce, clinical, operational, and strategic needs; make appropriate introductions; and create qualified opportunities for staffing, medical directorships, clinical leadership, quality improvement, care delivery support, and consulting services.
- Collaborate with executive and business development leaders on target markets, account priorities, outreach strategies, and measurable growth goals. Maintain an active pipeline and regularly communicate prospects, developments, and next steps.
- Lead clinical due diligence for prospective work, assessing demand, care gaps, workforce supply, clinical complexity, competition, delivery requirements, risks, and the feasibility of a sustainable solution.
- Work with business development, operations, recruiting, and finance to shape clinically sound staffing models and consulting scopes, including provider mix, coverage, implementation needs, deliverables, resources, and economics.
- Participate in prospect and client meetings, site visits, presentations, conferences, and industry events; contribute clinical content to proposals, RFP responses, pricing and scope discussions, and contract handoffs.
- Help advance opportunities from introduction and qualification through solution development, proposal, negotiation, award, and transition to operations.
- Strengthen existing accounts by monitoring client satisfaction, resolving clinical concerns, identifying evolving needs, and recommending appropriate additional services.
- Develop and deliver billable medical director, consulting, or other clinical services as assigned and agreed with clients. Help set and track annual goals for revenue contribution, billable work, pipeline development, client retention, and quality outcomes.
- Partner with operations to launch awarded work safely, with appropriate staffing and financially sustainable delivery.
External representation and executive collaboration- Represent the Company and speak effectively at client, Tribal, professional, and industry meetings and conferences.
- Travel to client and prospective client sites to assess needs, support clinical teams, strengthen relationships, and evaluate opportunities.
- Work respectfully with Tribal governments and health organizations, IHS facilities, and UIOs, adapting recommendations to each organization's priorities, governance, and care setting.
- Provide the CEO and other Company leaders with clear, evidence-based recommendations on clinical quality, market opportunities, delivery risks, and resource needs.
Qualifications Required- MD or DO degree and an active, unrestricted medical license; ability to obtain and maintain licenses, credentials, and privileges required for Company assignments.
- Substantial recent clinical practice and demonstrated judgment in the specialty relevant to assigned shifts.
- Experience leading clinical quality, patient safety, or provider performance initiatives, including investigating concerns and driving measurable improvement.
- Ability to build senior client relationships, speak persuasively to varied audiences, and explain complex clinical matters clearly.
- Commercial judgment and experience assessing healthcare opportunities, developing solutions, supporting business development, or delivering client-facing clinical services.
- Ability to work across clinical, recruiting, operational, and financial teams; strong writing, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Willingness and ability to complete the required clinical shifts and travel for client and Company needs.
Preferred- Board certification in an applicable specialty and approximately 10 or more years of clinical experience, including at least four years in medical leadership, administration, or management.
- Experience serving IHS, Tribal 638, UIO, rural, or other underserved healthcare settings, with a demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships across communities and organizations.
- Experience with provider staffing, medical directorships, healthcare consulting, RFPs, contracting, reimbursement, or launching clinical services.
- MHA, MBA, MPH, or comparable advanced training in healthcare leadership or business.
