About the Opportunity
At a pivotal time for UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, the Chief Financial Officer serves as a strategic partner to the President & CEO, Chief Operating Officer, Board, and senior leadership team. Building on a stable financial foundation and a capable finance team, the CFO is responsible for advancing finance into a forward-looking enterprise function focused on planning, resource allocation, decision support, organizational performance, and long-term financial sustainability. Initially, the CFO will work closely with the existing team to understand how work is currently performed, strengthen accountability and capability, and create the foundation for a more scalable and strategic finance function. The role exists to ensure that financial insight, forecasting, scenario analysis, performance measurement, and resource allocation effectively support organizational priorities and decision-making. The CFO will develop trusted relationships across professional leadership, Board and committee members, lay leaders, donors, partner agencies, and other key stakeholders, while leading improvements in analytics, systems, data, and processes that strengthen organizational effectiveness and scalability. Success in this role will depend on sound judgment, strong relationships, and the ability to build alignment across a complex stakeholder environment.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead the Finance function across UJA entities and operating activities, with accountability for financial stewardship, planning, reporting, controls and team performance.
- Own and lead the annual budget process and strengthen multi-year planning, forecasting and scenario analysis, aligning financial plans with strategic priorities.
- Lead resource allocation, reserve strategy and long-term sustainability planning, helping leadership assess competing priorities and strengthen UJA's financial resilience.
- Oversee investments and organizational assets, working with relevant Board committees and advisors to ensure sound governance, risk management and long-term stewardship.
- Lead financial reporting and discussions with the Board and relevant committees, providing clear context, insight and recommendations to support decision-making.
- Oversee the annual audit, internal controls, governance and compliance with internal requirements and external obligations, including CRA requirements.
- Ensure financial or other risks are appropriately identified, understood and addressed.
- Lead, mentor and develop the finance team, establishing clear accountabilities, succession depth and a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
- Champion systems, data and process improvements and strengthen financial acumen across the organization.
Qualifications:
- CPA designation.
- Senior financial leadership experience, ideally as a CFO or equivalent, within a complex organization with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Demonstrated success as a strategic partner to a CEO, senior leadership team and Board, with the judgment to influence effectively without relying solely on formal authority.
- Proven ability to succeed in a consensus-driven environment and build alignment across stakeholders with differing perspectives and priorities.
- Board experience is highly valued, particularly with philanthropic or community organizations that combine fundraising with meaningful operating activities.
- Track record of developing high-performance finance teams, developing leaders and leading thoughtful organizational change without creating unnecessary disruption.
- Strong governance, investment oversight, risk and analytical capabilities, with the ability to translate financial information into clear implications and choices for non-financial stakeholders.
- Strategic in orientation while sufficiently hands-on to understand the function, people and processes during a period of transition and evolution.
- Passion for UJA's mission and an appreciation for the complexity of serving a broad and highly engaged community.
