Responsibilities

  • Direct vessels to meet class certification requirements, coordinating preparation and follow-up.

  • Develop and maintain project costs and schedules for assigned vessels.
  • Ensure operability of all mechanical and electrical systems on vessels.
  • Maintain compliance with Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System requirements.
  • Supervise loading operations for fuel, water, and other essential materials, ensuring quality and record-keeping.
  • Perform repairs on machinery and equipment within scope and complete daily engine log.

Full Job Description
Unlimited Chief Engineer

Position Summary:

The Unlimited Chief Engineer provides leadership to vessel engineering personnel and is accountable for the safe condition, readiness, and operability of mechanical equipment aboard assigned offshore supply vessels and other Birdon vessels. This position provides technical oversight for vessel engineering activities and functions as Port Engineer, except during vessel trials.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Direct assigned vessels through class certification requirements, including coordination of preparation and follow-up activities.


  • Support testing, trials, and commissioning of Birdon vessels to ensure engineering systems are prepared, verified, and operational.


  • Maintain Birdon vessels while in service and oversee dry dockings, assigned projects, subcontractor activities, and associated engineering work.


  • Develop and maintain cost estimates and project schedules for assigned vessels.


  • Ensure the readiness and operability of main engines, propulsion equipment, auxiliary machinery, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, steering, deck, valve, piping, and watertight systems.


  • Ensure compliance with applicable Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System requirements established in the Birdon Operations Manual.


  • Supervise the loading of potable water, ballast water, fuel oil, and lube oil; verify appropriate quality and quantity; and maintain accurate Fuel Transfer Certificate entries.


  • Perform vessel machinery and equipment repairs within the Chief Engineer's scope of capability and complete the daily engine log.


  • Represent the company in a professional and courteous manner when interacting with customers, pilots, terminal personnel, company personnel, and the public.


Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.


  • Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential required.


  • Chief Engineer License, Unlimited Horsepower, required.


  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required.


  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test and physical are required.


Physical Requirements

  • Physical evaluation standards shall be based on U.S. Coast Guard NVIC 2-98, "Physical Evaluation Guidelines for Merchant Mariner Credentials."


  • The incumbent must be able to operate heavy machinery and perform repair work beneath machinery and in confined spaces, including frequent stooping and bending.
