Position Highlights The chief of the Division of Arthroplasty in the Department of Orthopaedics will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Division. The chief of Arthroplasty will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of the Division's academic, research, and clinical programs. This leader will have financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the Division, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other Division-related financial matters, in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. The chief will have discretion in the recruitment and retention of Division faculty, who will report directly to the chief of the Division of Arthroplasty.
This position reports directly to the chair of the Department of Orthopaedics within the College of Medicine - Phoenix for all academic activities. Consistent with the Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) between the University of Arizona and Banner Health, the chief will have a matrix reporting relationship to the CEO of Banner - University Medical Group (B-UMG) and CEO of Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix (B-UMCP) for all clinical activities conducted at B-UMCP.
This role provides strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for the Division while maintaining a robust clinical practice focused on adult reconstruction and joint replacement. The chief will foster excellence in patient care, education, research, faculty development, and ambulatory growth aligned with the missions of the University of Arizona and Banner Health.
The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service, and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
The successful candidate will meet the requirements for a career-track faculty member as outlined by the College and University. This career- track appointment is not eligible for tenure.
Duties & Responsibilities - Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Division of Arthroplasty, ensuring alignment with departmental, college and Banner Health priorities.
- Lead divisional efforts in quality, safety, patient outcomes and clinical standardization, including joint replacement pathways and value-based care initiatives.
- Partner with departmental and BUMG leadership on ambulatory growth strategies, access, clinic efficiency and care model optimization.
- Support faculty recruitment, onboarding, mentoring and professional development within the Division.
- Oversee divisional performance metrics, including volume, quality outcomes, patient experience and financial stewardship.
- Collaborate with hospital and health system leaders on service line development, technology adoption and program expansion.
- Participate in departmental and institutional leadership committees as appropriate.
- Maintain an active adult reconstruction/arthroplasty clinical practice, including primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty.
- Provide high-quality patient care in ambulatory clinic settings, surgical services and inpatient care at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary care teams, focusing on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), perioperative optimization and value-based care.
- Serve as a referral resource for complex arthroplasty cases within the Banner system.
- Teach and mentor medical students, residents and fellows in orthopedic surgery and related programs.
- Contribute to curriculum development and educational innovation within the Department of Orthopaedics.
- Support scholarly activity, including clinical research, outcomes research or educational scholarship, consistent with academic rank and interests.
- Promote a culture of inquiry, professionalism and continuous improvement.
Minimum Qualifications - Hold an MD or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher.
- Be board certified in speciality.
- Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
- Be eligible for medical staff membership at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix.
- Have a successful track record of publishing research findings in arthroplasty.
Preferred Qualifications - Exhibit greater than 10 years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
- Have leadership experience supervising orthopedic faculty and staff.
- Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal communication and professionalism skills.
