Position Description The College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the
Department of Psychology.
The Chair of the Department of Psychology leads the largest department in the College of Liberal Arts. Responsibilities include: overseeing the curriculum, budget, and hiring of faculty and staff; long-range strategic planning and facilitating growth in line with departmental vision; and representing the department on college and university councils. We seek a colleague who can foster academic excellence, strengthen and develop graduate programs, encourage interdisciplinary and engaged scholarship, and promote continued collegiality within the department. The department has a strong history of shared governance with a large and varied faculty, including both tenure-track and instructional-track faculty.
The Chair holds a 12-month appointment expected to start July 15, 2027. The successful applicant will meet the requirements for tenure in the Department of Psychology, ideally at the rank of Professor, though highly qualified Associate Professors may be considered.
Required Qualifications - Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Psychology or a closely related discipline (area of specialization open).
- Record of achievement in research, teaching, and service sufficient for appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the time of appointment.
- Demonstrated administrative leadership experience in higher education or a comparable professional setting, including responsibilities related to strategic planning, budget management, personnel supervision, policy implementation, curriculum oversight, and/or academic program administration.
- Demonstrated evidence of successful mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
- The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards.
Preferred Qualifications - Record of achievement in research, teaching, and service sufficient for appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor.
- Evidence of successful acquisition and management of externally funded projects.
- Demonstrated commitment to strengths-based management and transparency as a leader.
- Evidence of successful organizational and fiscal management practices consistent with managing and supporting a growing department and the strategic plans of the department, college, and university.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting departmental cohesion that prioritizes the success of both teaching-focused and research-focused faculty.
- Ability to cultivate external community partnerships to support and grow department initiatives and programming.
- Demonstrated experience supporting or participating in APA accreditation and program review processes.
