Job Summary

The Process Control Engineer has the primary responsibility for development, implementation, and maintenance of DCS-based controls and advanced process control (APC) applications, to improve unit performance and optimization through deployment and support of process control technology. The Process Control Engineer's secondary responsibility include assisting in control system maintenance, troubleshooting and/or upgrade as circumstances may require, as well as support to the alarm management program, advanced operator interface graphics, general troubleshooting of operating conditions, and support and training on control strategies, alarm management and HMI to Console Operators.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering degree
  • 2+ years of Prior experience in process control in a chemical, refining or comparable industry.
  • Basic or advanced understanding of process control theory, practices and techniques.
  • Computer literacy, including programming.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work in a multi-tasked environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PI preferred
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC)


Job Duties

  • Develop, implement, and maintain baselevel (DCS) control schemes to improves unit stability, environmental compliance and safety. Troubleshoot baselevel controls, Tuning and identifying instrument or equipment issues which impact control performance. Train Operations and Process Engineering personnel. Document schemes for Operations and for Process Control use. Crosstrain with Process Control Engineers & Analysts sufficently to allow basic support in the principal's temporary absence


  • Develop, implement, and maintain advanced process control applications to improve unit profitability and optimization. Identify and justify applications, working as necessary with Operations, Economics and third party consultants. Conduct process testing to develop required process models and inferred propeties. Commission applications, train Operations and Process Engineering personnel. Provide appropriate documentation. Maintain applications by updating models, limits, and variables as needed. Audit application performance and communicate lost opportunity from APC applications not being used or working as designed. Crosstrain with Process Control Engineers & Analysts sufficently to allow basic support in the principal's temporary absence


  • Operations support. Maintain communications with Operations personnel to ensure controls and HMI are effective and operating as designed. Adopt Operations suggestions as appropriate to improve control system effectiveness and maintain Operations confidence in Process Control


  • Support Process Control System Manager and Analysts on system/software upgrades and as first responder for control system problems. Understand and be able to perform designated preventive maintenance or 'first-aid' tasks as determined by Process Control System Manager.


  • Support capital projects, expense projects and unit turnarounds. Review proposed control strategies and recommend changes as needed. Plan and implement control strategies on appropriate platform. Coordinate with Project group to assign i/o consistent with DCS capacity and available controller resources. Provide operator documentation and training as needed. Examine capital projects for APC and optimization opportunities.


  • Support Process Control capital projects. Determine system needs, scope projects, collect data for project justification and design. Supervise internal and third party personnel during project execution.


  • Safety & Environmental stewardship. Support safety and environmental compliance through the implementation of appropriate control strategies, HMI design, and alarms. Work Osha-recordable free.
