Full Job Description
The physician assistant practices medicine under the supervision of a physician. They will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as delegated by a physician. Working as members of the health care team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays and make diagnoses. They may also treat minor injuries, by suturing, splinting and casting. They will record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, order and carry out therapies and update charts. May, if eligible, prescribe some medications. When working in a surgical arena, may provide preoperative and postoperative care and possibly work as first or second assistants during major surgeries. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

  • Clinical Practice Expert: Provides advanced level of direct and indirect care to individual patients/families and/or groups of patients/families in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Evidence-Based Consultant & Researcher: Demonstrates collaborative leadership with researchers, other health professionals, divisions, and departments to generate knowledge and make practice changes based on research findings, as well as, the results of the organizational and departmental quality improvement processes.
  • Clinical Leadership: Provides leadership in meeting system, organizational, division, and departmental goals.
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self-development.

Supervision Provided by this Position

Physical Demands
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Exposure to excessive heat or cold as required.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • Frequent travel outside hospital.
  • Frequent handling or administering of narcotics.
  • Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance and push and pull up to 250 lbs.
  • Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend throughout the shift.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
