Job DescriptionThe CapEx Machine Safety Engineer serves as the division subject-matter expert for machine and functional safety across capital equipment and facilities projects. The role integrates risk assessment and safeguarding requirements throughout the capital project lifecycle, from initiation and specification through installation, commissioning, and closeout, so that new, modified, and rebuilt machinery is designed to reduce risk to an acceptable level before startup. The position owns the standardized machine risk assessment program and machine guarding policy, partners with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, EH&S, and equipment vendors, and applies ISO 12100, ANSI B11, ISO 13849, and IEC 62061. This role has no direct reports, directs third-party integrators and contractors on assigned projects, requires up to 30% overnight travel, and typically works standard business hours with flexibility for project and startup needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:- Serve as the machine safety authority for the CapEx project portfolio, integrating risk assessment and safeguarding requirements into project scope, funding requests, specifications, and RFQs from project initiation through closeout.
- Develop, own, and continuously improve a division standardized machine risk assessment process aligned with ISO 12100 and ANSI B11.0, including hazard identification, risk scoring, and validation of risk reduction measures.
- Own the division Machine Guarding Policy and drive standardized, safe-by-design guarding solutions across divisions and plant locations.
- Specify, evaluate, and validate safeguarding technologies and safety control systems, including interlocks, light curtains, safety-rated devices, safety PLCs, and controllers, to achieve the required Performance Level or Safety Integrity Level.
- Conduct and document machine risk assessments for new capital equipment and existing machinery; prepare technical reports and present findings to engineering, operations, and management stakeholders.
- Review vendor equipment designs, electrical schematics, and safety circuits during procurement and installation to verify compliance with division standards and applicable codes.
- Manage concurrent machine guarding and safeguarding projects across the division, including directing third-party integrators at multiple sites.
- Coordinate safeguarding activities performed by contractors and plant maintenance personnel during project execution, commissioning, and startup.
- Participate in incident investigations focused on the employee-machine interface and translate findings into corrective design and process improvements.
- Deliver machine guarding and functional safety training and awareness to site engineering teams, Central Engineering, and EH&S.
- Participate in strategic planning for manufacturing process and facility modifications to control machine risks early through Prevention through Design.
- Build and maintain relationships with plant engineering, EH&S, and safety equipment vendors; participate in relevant management meetings and professional groups to remain current on standards, trends, and technology.
- Travel to CCM facilities to support assessments, project planning, equipment installation, startup, and training.
QualificationsRequired Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:- Deep knowledge of Type A, B, and C machinery safety standards and U.S. counterparts, including ISO 12100, ANSI B11.0, ANSI B11.19, and ANSI/RIA R15.06.
- Knowledge of functional safety design and verification under ISO 13849-1/-2 and IEC 62061, including PL/SIL determination and quantitative assessment.
- Understanding of the hierarchy of risk reduction: inherently safe design, engineering controls, administrative controls, and information for use.
- Knowledge of machine control and electrical safety principles under NFPA 79 and IEC 60204-1, hazardous energy control under ANSI Z244.1, and OSHA machine guarding requirements under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart O.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and safety-system architecture; install, integrate, and troubleshoot machine safety control systems.
- Ability to write risk assessment reports, develop safeguarding specifications and RFQs, evaluate vendor proposals, and present technical findings effectively.
- Strong project-management, organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing plants and electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; proficiency with Microsoft Office and cross-functional teamwork.
- Ability to remain current on machine safety technologies and standards.
Education and Experience:- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 2+ years of experience in functional safety and machine guarding, including installation or integration of machine safeguarding solutions in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Background in PLC programming and safety controllers.
- Willingness to achieve TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety for Machinery Engineer certification within two years of hire.
