Full Job Description
Position Overview

We're hiring our first on-the-ground team member in New Mexico-a commercially driven role for a technically trained person-someone who can earn a lab director's confidence in a meeting and then back it up on the hardware. New Mexico is one of the densest concentrations of quantum research and infrastructure in the world, and this role exists to make Maybell the default cryogenic platform there-starting at the state-backed Roadrunner Quantum Lab (RQL) in Albuquerque, where we are deploying our dilution refrigerators.

Your mandate is to grow Maybell's footprint across the region, and your technical depth is what earns you the right to. The work splits two ways. First and foremost, growing the market: opening new labs, new programs, and new groups within existing accounts, driving customers to book time on the RQL systems, and converting regional presence into orders-both access on the New Mexico fleet and system sales more broadly. Second, hands-on support of the systems themselves: helping customers install, cool down, operate, troubleshoot, and get the most out of their dilution refrigerators. Underpinning both is relationship-building across the national labs, universities, startups, and state and federal initiatives, and turning local presence into adoption.

This role reports to the VP of Operations and is based at the Roadrunner Quantum Lab in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with regular travel to customer sites in the region and periodic travel to Maybell headquarters in Denver, CO.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Market Growth
  • Build and own Maybell's relationships across the New Mexico quantum ecosystem: national labs, universities, research consortia, startups, and state and federal programs.
  • Build and own a regional pipeline-new labs, new programs, and new groups within existing accounts-qualifying opportunities and working alongside Sales to close them.
  • Drive utilization of the RQL fleet: recruit researchers and teams to book time on the New Mexico systems, convert first-time users into recurring users, and use that access as a path to full-system sales.
  • Carry and forecast regional growth targets: track pipeline health, report progress to leadership, and own the number for your territory.
  • Represent Maybell at regional conferences, workshops, user groups, and site visits; run demos and technical briefings that translate capability into a concrete business case for the customer.
  • Partner with Marketing to turn regional work into content: customer stories, application notes, and technical talks.
  • Track the regional landscape-funding, programs, competitors, and new entrants-and translate it into recommendations for leadership.
  • Act as Maybell's local presence and reputation: the person the ecosystem calls first.

Field Operations & Customer Support
  • Support installation, commissioning, cooldown, and ongoing operation of Maybell cryogenic systems at customer sites.
  • Serve as the on-site owner of Maybell's four-dilution-refrigerator fleet at the RQL-shared infrastructure engineered to run five or more tenant teams and 20-30 researchers across dedicated lab environments.
  • Serve as the first line of technical response for regional customers-diagnose issues, resolve what you can on site, and escalate cleanly with the documentation Engineering needs.
  • Train customer teams on system operation, maintenance, and best practices; build the operating guidance and troubleshooting playbooks the region reuses.
  • Own the health of your accounts: track system uptime and open issues, and drive them to resolution with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Support.
  • Feed field learnings back into product-recurring failure modes, usability gaps, and feature requests grounded in real customer experience.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field. This role requires real technical fluency-a commercial background alone will not carry it.
  • 3-7 years in a field applications, technical sales, business development, applications engineering, or technical account management role-including meaningful time owning customer relationships and commercial outcomes, not solely technical delivery.
  • Hands-on experience with cryogenic systems, dilution refrigerators, vacuum systems, or comparable precision laboratory hardware.
  • Genuine comfort on both sides of the role-troubleshooting hardware in the morning and briefing a lab director in the afternoon.
  • Demonstrated track record of opening new accounts, building partnerships, or growing a territory in a technical market.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-specialist stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently as a remote, single-person site while staying tightly connected to a distributed team.
  • Based in New Mexico, or willing to relocate; able to travel regularly within the region.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any clearances required for customer site access.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with quantum computing hardware, superconducting qubits, or quantum sensing.
  • Existing relationships within the New Mexico or broader Southwest quantum and national-lab ecosystem-Sandia, Los Alamos, the University of New Mexico, or the state's quantum initiative.
  • Prior experience in a customer-facing role at a hardware startup.
  • Experience developing training materials, technical documentation, or customer-facing content.
  • Familiarity with federal and state research funding cycles, grant-driven purchasing, and lab procurement processes.

What We Offer
  • Competitive Compensation: Base salary range $115,000-$145,000, plus variable compensation tied to regional growth targets, and meaningful equity participation.
  • Ownership: You are Maybell's presence in one of the most important quantum regions in the country-this role is defined by what you build in it.
  • Growth Trajectory: A natural path into regional leadership as the territory and customer base scale.
  • Exceptional Team: Collaboration with world-class scientists, engineers, and business leaders who are defining a new industry.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Health, dental, vision insurance, 401(k), and more.
