Full Job Description
Overview

Future aircraft demand future software controls. Joby Autonomy seeks a Senior Software Engineer to develop mission-critical UI for our aircraft remote operations platform. Above and beyond conventional front-ends, our instruments give ground control operators real-time situational awareness and flight control of experimental vehicles.  In this role you will design, implement, field test, safeguard and ruggedize those instruments to perform under real-world conditions.

Don't just have a safe flight; build the front-end with us that ensures it.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain real-time, highly performant UI instruments for monitoring and controlling experimental aircraft systems from ground control stations
  • Collaborate with flight test engineers, systems engineers, and remote operators to translate complex operational requirements into intuitive, reliable workflows
  • Establish and champion best practices in front-end architecture, state management, UI component reusability, and front-end performance across the team
  • Utilize advanced engineering workflows—including AI code assistance—while exercising thorough oversight, code review, and technical diligence to maintain high software quality
  • Partner across multidisciplinary teams to explore end-to-end system integrations, building a deep shared understanding of ground station and aircraft interactions
  • Lead technical design initiatives and contribute directly to product direction from a grounded, operator-focused perspective
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience with 5+ years of professional software development experience (or Master's degree with 3+ years of experience) delivering production-grade web applications
  • Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, React (hooks, state management, component architecture), HTML5, and CSS
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clear technical goals and constraints when using modern developer tools, backed by strict due diligence to audit and verify coding assistant output
  • Solid understanding of software architecture, modular UI design, and front-end testing practices
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills in fast-paced research or hardware-in-the-loop environments

Desired
  • Aerospace or flight-test operational experience
  • Familiarity with the Bazel build system
  • Strong technical curiosity driving deep comprehension of full end-to-end software architectures
  • Experience building telemetry visualization, dynamic mapping, or data-dense command-and-control dashboards
  • Experience with low-level graphics APIs, real-time streaming data protocols, and desktop integration frameworks
