Job Description

This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks a section chief for the Revenue Section, a part of the Agency Counsel Division of the Attorney General's Office.

The Section Chief supervises and manages the Revenue Section's dozen or so lawyers and support staff and is the Office's lead representative to the Iowa Department of Revenue. The Section represents the Department before courts and administrative tribunals and gives legal advice to the agency on matters related to its operations. Litigation occurs primarily in state courts and federal bankruptcy courts to enforce and recover state tax assessments. This position is responsible for providing legal services and advice in the field of tax, lottery and ABD and tobacco compliance. The Section Chief reports to the Deputy Attorney General for Agency Counsel.

Requirements and Preferences:
Candidates must have a passion for public service and exceptional skills in statutory construction, construing transaction and estate documents, and furnishing written and oral advice to clients on complicated matters. The most competitive candidates will have experience practicing tax law, advising government bodies, financial and tax poli-cy, and managing a team of legal professionals. This position requires five years of experience practicing law and licenses, or the ability to obtain licenses, to practice law in Iowa and Iowa's federal and bankruptcy courts.

Pay and Benefits:

Salary ranges from $118,414.40 to $168,417.60, depending on experience.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited school of law, and experience equal to five years of full-time work in the practice of law.

2) Current, continuous experience in the Department of Justice that includes three years of full-time work in the practice of law.
