Associate Software Engineer, Java
Trellis Energy is hiring a full-time AssociateSoftware Engineer, Java. to join our team in a hybrid model. In this role, you will work across the full stack to build and support complex, enterprise-grade cloud applications.
We encourage our engineers to leverage modern AI-assisted development tools-specifically terminal and IDE workflows like Claude Code paired with IntelliJ-to boost productivity, accelerate coding workflows, and build intelligent features.
You will work closely with our internal Product and Client Service teams on a day-to-day basis to align on features, resolve issues, and deliver technical solutions. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to directly communicate with client teams to clarify requirements, provide technical updates, and lead solution demos.
Responsibilities:
• Full-Stack Development: Design, build, test, and maintain features across our Java backend and web frontend.
• Cross-Functional & Client Communication:
o Partner closely with internal Product Team to break down feature requirements and technical design specifications.
o Collaborate with the Client Service Team to troubleshoot escalated support tickets and deliver timely technical resolutions.
o Communicate directly with external client stakeholders when necessary to discuss requirements, explain technical approaches, and present demos.
• AI Tooling & Automation: Leverage Claude Code and terminal-based agentic tools to accelerate codebase navigation, refactoring, test writing, and bug fixes. Write Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers/connectors to integrate internal tools and client workflows.
• Architecture & Design: Learn the Trellis software architecture, participate in technical design sessions, and produce concise technical specifications.
• Quality & Operations: Write and maintain comprehensive unit and integration tests, participate in code reviews, and support continuous delivery pipelines.
• Product Ownership: Proactively propose innovative technical and architectural improvements based on product usage and direct client feedback.
Required:
• Experience: 0-2 years of software engineering experience in full-stack web application development (entry-level graduates with strong project experience are encouraged to apply).
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Core Technologies:
o Backend: Solid fundamentals in Java and the Spring Ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Security, Data/Hibernate).
o Frontend: Strong JavaScript proficiency, with hands-on experience in React, jQuery, and UI component libraries like Ant Design or ag-Grid.
o Database: Relational databases, specifically Oracle DB, and proficiency writing SQL.
o Development Environment: Experience using modern IDEs (e.g., VS Code, Eclipse, NetBeans, or IntelliJ) with a willingness to adopt IntelliJ IDEA.
• AI Fluency: Hands-on experience or familiarity using command-line/agentic AI tools like Claude Code to analyze codebases, generate tests, and automate engineering workflows, alongside familiarity with building or configuring MCP tools.
• Communication & Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable translating technical concepts for internal Product/Client Service partners and engaging directly with external clients.
• Fundamentals: Solid understanding of object-oriented design, RESTful APIs, modern Git workflows, and Agile development methodologies.
Preferred:
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, etc.).
• Basic understanding of or interest in enterprise SaaS platforms or the energy/natural gas sector.
• Proven ability to independently research and solve complex technical problems.
