Summary of Responsibilities:
Every relay setting, protective scheme, and automation solution plays a critical role in keeping the transmission system safe, reliable, secure, and ready for the future.
ATC is looking for a technically curious, safety-focused engineer who wants to solve complex power system challenges, advance digital substation solutions, and see their work progress from concept through commissioning and operation.
This role is ideal for an engineer who combines power systems expertise, disciplined judgment, strong documentation, and practical cross-functional partnership.
Essential Responsibilities:
What You'll Do
• Design and support protective relaying schemes that detect and isolate system failures, limit equipment damage, and strengthen grid reliability.
• Develop relay settings, short-circuit and fault-duty calculations, coordination studies, and supporting engineering records.
• Design substation control, automation, and metering solutions, including digital and hybrid substation architectures.
• Analyze disturbances, event records, and protection or control operations to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
• Support installation, testing, commissioning, operations, and maintenance activities in electrical substations.
• Evaluate emerging hardware, software, communication protocols, and technology platforms, then improve standards, drawings, point lists, manuals, and procedures.
• Partner with contractors and external vendors to support onboarding, establish deliverable expectations, and facilitate completion of assigned work.
• Provides operational support as part of a rotating on-call schedule, including occasional after-hours response as business needs require.
What You'll Bring
Technical foundation
• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Knowledge or experience in power systems, protective relaying, substation controls, metering, or data acquisition.
• Ability to read, develop, and review schematics, logic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and construction documentation.
• Coursework or emphasis in power systems, protection and control systems, communications, or computer systems is preferred.
• Professional Engineer licensure may be preferred for senior-level positions.
Working style
• Analytical, methodical, and detail-oriented.
• Safety-focused and composed during urgent technical events.
• Collaborative across technical disciplines and able to explain complex information clearly.
• Self-directed, adaptable, accountable, and receptive to coaching.
• Comfortable working in both office and substation environments.
The Impact You Can Make
• Protect critical electric infrastructure and help ATC operate the transmission system safely and reliably.
• Turn event data, engineering studies, and sound judgment into practical improvements.
• Modernize substations through digital protection, automation, communications, and standardized architectures.
• Build trusted partnerships across field teams, project partners, contractors, vendors, and neighboring utilities.
