Position Overview
Apollo’s Thematic Investing team is a lean, special situations-style group that centralizes market and investment perspectives across the firm and serves as the early warning risk system for the entire organization. It delivers insights on major investment themes to senior leadership and investment teams, supports unified views of their impact on investment decisions, and strengthens internal connectivity through data and information sharing across investment teams. The team also invests directly, leading venture equity and venture debt transactions in growth-stage technology companies and covering select single-name credits across large private and public companies. The team integrates data and technology into its approach to improve and streamline investment processes. This is an opportunity to join a small team that works on the firm’s most critical projects, deals and priorities.
The Associate or Principal (depending on candidate experience) will play a pivotal role in building and refining Apollo’s overall investment theses by anchoring analytical depth and ensuring financial rigor in thematic development. This involves identifying key firm themes and priorities; conducting detailed research to synthesize findings; and effectively communicating cross-functional insights to leadership across the platform, ensuring alignment and coherence in investment decision-making. The role is equally an investing seat: the candidate will lead end-to-end diligence and execution of equity and debt transactions in growth-stage technology companies and cover select single-name credits across large private and public companies, translating thematic views into live investment decisions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead and develop core thematic research workstreams for all of Apollo’s investment verticals
- Lead end-to-end diligence and execution of venture equity & debt transactions in growth-stage technology companies, including underwriting, financial modeling, structuring, investment committee materials and closing
- Cover select single-name credits across large private and public companies, developing and maintaining underwriting views that inform investment decisions across the firm’s credit platforms
- Build detailed and thorough valuation models and financial frameworks
- Draft investment theses and presentations that effectively communicate views on major emerging themes/risks, including corporate “insurgents”, technology trends, business cycles and geopolitics
- Tie secular and market themes to investment opportunities in public and private markets
- Manage and execute 2-4 research projects per year on long-term themes that can be leveraged for investment purposes or external content (e.g., AI disruption; Compute and Data Center Infrastructure; Future of Finance; Reindustrialization; Quantum Computing; Renewable Energy)
- Monitor thematic, sector and single-name risks across the platform and surface emerging issues to senior leadership as part of the team’s early warning function
- Identify and leverage data analytics and AI-based tools to promote efficiency across investment processes and as a proof of concept for broader firm adoption
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from a top-tier accredited institution, ideally with majors in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or similar
- Minimum 4 years of experience in investment banking or buy-side (private equity, private credit, growth equity)
- Strong business acumen and industry research skills required
- Financial modeling, valuation and credit underwriting proficiency
- Transaction experience leading or supporting diligence and execution of equity and/or debt investments, including drafting investment committee materials
- Exposure to growth-stage technology investing is a plus but not required
- Proven ability to lead research workstreams and coordinate inputs from cross-functional teams
- Strong analytical skills and experience identifying and distilling key themes and trends
- AI-native and curiosity is a must. The ideal candidate uses frontier models as a default working environment, builds their own tools when none exist, and is as fluent in how the technology works as in what it is worth
- Effective and articulate communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interface directly with senior leaders
- Exceptional presentation drafting experience
