Description:
Renders legal advice, services, and representation to the University of Houston System and its component institutions. Serves as a higher education legal generalist for the University of Houston System and its component institutions.
Job Duties
1. Provides comprehensive guidance and advice with direction from the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel to University administrators, faculty, and staff on legal issues of all types, including but not limited to discrimination and civil rights, faculty, staff, and student issues, labor and employment, compliance, contracts, and administrative proceedings.
2. Reviews requests for information maintained by the University of Houston System and its component institutions, assesses which items should be responded to and which are objectionable.
3. Attends meetings, depositions, mediations, witness interviews, and hearings.
4. Represents the University of Houston System and its component institutions in administrative and legal matters and proceedings.
5. Serves as a liaison with administrative agencies in legal matters.
6. Interacts with opposing counsels and courts.
7. Drafts documents, letters, policies, legislation, and other legal materials.
8. Trains administrators on specific legal issues.
9. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Education:
Requires singular knowledge of a specialized advanced professional discipline or the highest level of general business knowledge, normally acquired through attainment of a directly job-related terminal degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a J.D. or L.L.M.
Experience
Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Licensed to practice law for at least seven years. Seven years of legal experience representing institutions of higher education or practicing law at a law firm or company. Familiarity with the representation of public entities is a plus; Knowledge and experience
Certification:
Requires professional licensing, certification or registration directly related to the job, as specified on a job description addendum.
Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
On Experience:
Familiarity with the representation of public entities is a plus;
-Knowledge and experience in healthcare operations and compliance are a plus;
-Knowledge and experience in contracts is a plus;
-Knowledge and experience in real estate and construction is a plus;
-Knowledge and experience in employment and civil rights law is a plus; and
-Litigation experience with the ability to act as co-counsel is a plus.
