DescriptionThis journey-level position performs a full range of professional civil engineering duties related to land development, planning, design, construction, and maintenance. The position works with considerable independence on complex engineering assignments and ensures compliance with applicable standards, regulations, policies, and procedures. Incumbents appointed to the Associate Engineer classification are required to obtain a California Civil Engineer license within one (1) year of appointment. Upon obtaining the license, the incumbent's title will be designated as Associate Civil Engineer. This designation reflects professional licensure.
Examples of Duties- Performs professional-level engineering work supporting the design, construction, and maintenance of City infrastructure, including streets, lighting, storm drainage, sewers, traffic systems, parks, and landscaping.
- Prepares project designs, engineering drawings, construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and bid and contract documents for assigned projects.
- Participates in the issuance of various construction permits including encroachment, transportation, and grading permits.
Typical QualificationsEducation/Training:A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or related field.
Experience:Two years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience comparable to an Assistant Engineer with the City of Suisun City.
License or Certificate:Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California Class C Driver's License.
Associate Engineer requires possession of a valid Engineer in Training Certificate. If hired as an Associate Engineer, registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is required within one year of employment, in order to successfully pass the probationary period.
Candidates who possess a Civil Engineer license upon hire will be hired as Associate Civil Engineer.

Medical Insurance - The City pays for medical coverage up to current Kaiser Permanente Family rate. Employees covered by another insurance plan may be eligible for a cash payment up to $700 per month in lieu of enrolling in the City's health plans. Retirement - Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) of 2% @ 55 for Classic Employees, or 2% @ 62 for new employees subject to the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) of 2013. City does not participate in Social Security, but does withhold for Medicare, in accordance with federal law.
Longevity year 1: 2% at 5 years, 2% at 10 years, 2% at 15 years (total of 6%).
Education Incentive Pay - 3% for advanced degree beyond current requirement for job.
Life Insurance - Fully City-paid life insurance of $200,000 for employee only.
Deferred Compensation Plan - City contributes match up to 4% of base pay or $118 per pay period, whichever is greater, into the Deferred Compensation Plan.
Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $1,500 per year upon successful completion of approved program.
Paid Leave - 96 hours of sick leave, 80 hours executive leave, 14 paid holidays per year (including two floating holidays), and 80 hours paid vacation per year for the first five years of service, increasing over time.
Alternative Work Schedule - The standard City work schedule is 9/80 with alternate Fridays off.
