Academic Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Spine Surgery


The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking candidates for a tenure eligible Assistant Professor position to start January 2027. This clinical faculty position is responsible for providing exceptional patient care in the management of spine conditions including traumatic conditions, congenital conditions, arthritic conditions and infectious conditions with a commitment to musculoskeletal research. Experience in the sub-specialized area of spine oncology is preferred. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated clinical expertise and the ability to perform quality basic scientific or clinical research. Candidates must have a MD and be board-eligible or board-certified as well as have completed a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery concentrating in the spine. Salary and tenure status are dependent upon qualifications. The position will remain open until filled.

The selected candidate will join a group of 30 orthopaedic faculty who share emergency orthopaedic call coverage at a Level 1 quaternary care trauma center, and assist in management of other musculoskeletal conditions outside of the spine domain as needed for the Central Virginia region. The candidate will share Spine emergency call with other Orthopaedic spine faculty. The candidate will see patients in our newly constructed UVA Orthopaedic Center Ivy Road, a 200,000 square foot facility housing all adult orthopaedic subspecialties, physical therapy, operating rooms, conference space, prosthetics and orthotics, and a sports medicine center. The candidate may also see spine patients in local outreach clinics. The candidate will perform surgery in both the in-patient and the out-patient areas of the UVA Health System.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
Education: Candidates must have an MD and be board-eligible or board-certified. A fellowship in the sub-specialty of Spine Surgery is expected as well as evidence of academic productivity.
Experience: Qualified applicants must have demonstrated clinical expertise and have demonstrated the ability to perform quality basic scientific or clinical research.
Licensure: Candidates must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Virginia and be board-eligible or board-certified.
