Position Introduction:
The Department of French and Francophone Studies at Vassar College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2027. Preference will be given to candidates who bring transnational and transhistorical perspectives to the Mediterranean world or Francophone diasporas.
Job Description:
We seek an outstanding scholar and excellent French language teacher who can develop inspiring literature and culture courses for undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. The chronological focus is open, but preference will be given to candidates who bring transnational and transhistorical perspectives to the Mediterranean world or Francophone diasporas. The successful candidate will engage in innovative methodologies and work across disciplines. Candidates must show evidence of active research, teaching excellence, and fluency in French and English. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching French language and literature/culture courses at all levels. The ability to teach our translation seminar is a plus. In addition to contributing to the departmental curriculum, this position will include teaching in one or more multidisciplinary programs on campus, and offers the possibility of directing the Vassar Wesleyan Program in Paris. The teaching load in the first year is four courses, followed by five courses annually in subsequent years. Our new colleague will be expected to fully participate in the life of the department and the college.

Pay Transparency Disclosure:
The annual base starting salary range for this position is $96,000 to $106,000 (USD). This range includes new faculty appointments beginning the first year of a standard tenure clock as well as Assistant Professors with previous tenure-line experience who will be on an accelerated tenure clock. When extending an offer of employment, Vassar College considers factors such as (but not limited to) candidate’s education/training, work experience, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations. This salary range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of posting. The starting salary for an Assistant Professor in this position with a PhD beginning the first year of a standard tenure clock in Fall 2027 is $100,000.
