Position Title Assistant Professor, Mathematics (Tenure- Track)

Los Medanos College's Math Department has 11 full-time faculty members and is excited for a new member. With the advent of AB705/1705 the number of students enrolling in first-level transfer courses has increased. The Math department seeks faculty who are familiar with instructional techniques, institutional resources, and can direct students to the appropriate resources to support the diverse first-level transfer students. Recently, the LMC Math department has been remodeling the coursework pathways and designing new courses such as Quantitative Reasoning and even Calculus Support. This position can teach a wide variety of courses in the Math department, including transfer-level coursework and major/ STEM level coursework. Other department duties will involve working with teams in meeting their goals of strategically remodeling and design to increase the quality of teaching and learning and equitable outcomes for all students taking math at LMC . Our department is committed to increasing the success and retention rates in math classes for Black students at LMC . We are also improving our curriculum to be more culturally responsive. We are looking for instructors who share a strong commitment to pedagogies that close equity gaps.
Recruitment Timeline:
1) Initial review of applications will occur [December 2026].
2) Selected applicants will be contacted in [January 2027] to schedule an interview. Interviews will take place in-person in [February 2027].
3) Final interviews will be held [February/March 2027]. Applicants will be responsible for travel expenses. The college nor the District reimburses for travel expenses.
No candidate for a full-time position shall be recommended as a finalist to the President without meeting the minimum qualifications or having been verified as meeting the equivalency.

Initial salary placement for full-time, tenure track positions is based on academic degree(s), upper/graduate level units earned, teaching experience and/or qualifying related professional occupation experience which ranges from $68,136 to $112,848 per year (Up to $132k).

Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College's shared governance processes.
Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience
Master's in mathematics or applied mathematics OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in statistics, physics or mathematics education OR the equivalent. If you do not possess the listed degree, you can apply for an equivalency. Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.
License/Certificates/Credentials
Desirable Qualifications
#1: Ability and willingness to support students in various mathematics courses including courses with support, i.e., Statistics with support, Precalculus with Support, and Applied Calculus with support, Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and/or Discrete Mathematics. Furthermore, willingness to provide adequate support to students in order to promote success and retention.
#2: Ability to facilitate effective mathematical learning in the classroom of various teaching modalities (online synchronous, online asynchronous, face-to-face, or hybrid). Several strategies may include experience in utilizing innovative class discussions, facilitating student collaboration /group work, tutoring, discovery learning, and designing lab activities/ just-in-time support.
#3: Ability and willingness to integrate new and existing technology and Software/ Tools into the curriculum. These include Desmos or any calculator suite, Statcrunch, R, Geogebra, OER , etc.
#4: Demonstrate experience and/or willingness to participate as a team member or leader in committees. Some examples are as follows: Math Path To Transfer, Math Teaching Communities, and Various Math Cohorts (Puente, UMOJA , Honors, etc.).
#5: Have sensitivity and understanding of diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities.

United Faculty has an agency fee of .55% of gross pay plus $2.50.

Selection Process
