The Transfusion Medicine and Cell Therapy Service activities are both high in complexity and volume. In addition to transfusing over 50,000 products annually, Transfusion Medicine has an active consultative service as well as oversight of the blood management and quality programs. The Donor Room collects over 2,000 allogeneic blood products in addition to over 1000 stem cell collection, MNC collection and therapeutic procedures. The Cell Therapy Laboratory is FACT-accredited and supports many standard-of-care and research cell therapies for patients.
Position overview: The Transfusion Medicine and Cell Therapy Service in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at MSK is seeking a highly motivated and successful individual with a background in Transfusion Medicine at the level of Assistant or Associate Attending Pathologist. Candidates must be American Board of Pathology certified or eligible for Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. The MSK Transfusion Medicine and Cell Therapy Service represents one of the largest services in the United States dedicated to the care of cancer patients. The laboratory system is harmonized across four sites within Manhattan, and six regional sites located in New Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island. Experience in immunohematology, transfusion service operations and logistics, apheresis (collection and therapeutic) and cell therapy laboratory activities are desirable.
Key responsibilities: - Clinical and Administrative:
- Consultation with health care providers and multidisciplinary disease management teams on laboratory testing to support the management of cancer patients. (e.g. platelet refractoriness, granulocytes, antibody workups)
- Concurrent review and approval of blood product orders
- Review and evaluation of antibody evaluations and reference testing
- HPC and MNC collection procedures for transplantation, cell and gene therapy.
- Therapeutic apheresis procedures
- Reviewing collection, infusion, and donor eligibility records for cell therapy products.
- Maintenance of compliance with regulatory mandates as a director or assistant director of core laboratories, point of care testing or other specialty areas.
- Teaching:
- Training clinical fellows, pathology residents, students, laboratory technologists and supervisors through lectures, clinical supervision and mentorship.
Qualified candidates must have: - Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking ABPath-certification or eligibility
- Additional boards in Clinical Pathology or AP/CP preferred
- Candidates must have an MD, DO, or MD PhD with the ability to obtain a NYS Medical License
- Eligibility to obtain NYS DOH COQs in the appropriate categories related to transfusion medicine/blood banking practice is also mandatory

Salary Range: $260,000 - $425,000
