Position OverviewSpring Grove Recovery Center is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and experienced Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to support the leadership and daily operations of our nursing department.
The ADON works closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care in our residential substance use disorder treatment facility. This position combines clinical nursing responsibilities with leadership, staff development, regulatory compliance, and operational oversight.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on nursing leader who can effectively manage competing priorities, support nursing staff, maintain regulatory standards, and contribute to a positive environment focused on patient safety, recovery, and professional accountability.
Key Responsibilities - Nursing Leadership and Supervision
- Assist the Director of Nursing in overseeing daily nursing operations and ensuring consistent delivery of quality patient care.
- Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and support to nursing personnel across all shifts.
- Supervise regular and PRN nursing staff as delegated by the DON.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, orientation, training, performance evaluations, and corrective actions.
- Oversee nursing operations in the absence of the Director of Nursing within delegated authority.
- Monitor nursing schedules, staffing levels, attendance, and coverage needs.
- Provide direct patient care and cover nursing shifts when necessary due to call-offs, staffing shortages, or operational needs.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and effective communication throughout the nursing department.
Clinical Nursing and Patient Care - Conduct nursing assessments, admission screenings, and ongoing patient evaluations within the scope of professional licensure.
- Collaborate with physicians and Nurse Practitioners to determine patient needs and appropriate levels of care.
- Monitor patient conditions, recognize changes in symptoms, and promptly communicate concerns to appropriate medical providers.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with authorized orders, nursing scope of practice, and facility policies.
- Obtain, document, and monitor patient vital signs according to established protocols.
- Respond to medical emergencies, initiate appropriate interventions, and coordinate emergency medical services when necessary.
- Assist with patient intake, admissions, and clinical stabilization.
- Support patient safety, appropriate monitoring, and adherence to established treatment protocols.
Medication and Laboratory Management - Coordinate laboratory testing, including toxicology screenings and bloodwork, in accordance with authorized provider orders.
- Receive, review, document, and communicate laboratory results to appropriate medical providers.
- Coordinate with pharmacies to ensure timely medication availability.
- Ensure medications are received, stored, administered, and documented in accordance with applicable regulations and facility policies.
- Monitor controlled substances, medication inventory, and medication administration records.
- Identify and report medication discrepancies, errors, or safety concerns.
- Support medication audits and corrective action initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance - Assist the DON in maintaining compliance with applicable Colorado regulations, nursing standards, licensing requirements, and facility policies.
- Conduct routine nursing documentation reviews, medication audits, and clinical compliance checks.
- Identify areas for improvement and assist in developing corrective action plans.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation.
- Participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
- Assist with regulatory inspections, licensing surveys, and accreditation activities as applicable.
- Ensure staff follow infection prevention, emergency response, and patient confidentiality protocols.
Staff Development and Operational Support - Assist with developing and implementing nursing training programs.
- Identify educational needs and provide coaching to improve staff competency and performance.
- Participate in departmental meetings, interdisciplinary care coordination, and leadership discussions.
- Address nursing-related concerns, staff conflicts, and operational challenges professionally.
- Assist the DON with departmental projects, policies, procedures, and process improvements.
- Participate in an assigned on-call rotation, including up to five days per week for 12 hours per day, as operationally required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
Supervisory Responsibilities - The Assistant Director of Nursing assists with supervising nursing personnel and carrying out delegated management responsibilities in accordance with Spring Grove Recovery Center policies and applicable employment laws.
- Responsibilities may include staffing coordination, employee development, performance management, corrective action recommendations, and oversight of clinical nursing operations.
Position Requirements Education, Licensure, and QualificationsRequired Qualifications - Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) recognized by the State of Colorado.
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program appropriate to the candidate's nursing license.
- Minimum of two years of professional nursing experience.
- Strong clinical assessment, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to provide direct patient care and support nursing operations in a fast-paced treatment environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Ability to perform assigned duties within the individual's authorized nursing scope of practice.
Preferred Qualifications - Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred for RN candidates.
- Previous nursing leadership, charge nurse, supervisory, or management experience.
- Two or more years of experience in behavioral health, mental health, detoxification, or residential treatment.
- Experience working with individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorders.
- Knowledge of medication management, nursing documentation, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance.
- Experience with electronic health records and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
