Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Engineering. Five (5) years of engineering design experience. Experience with planning, code compliance, and engineering design review. Current NYS Professional Engineer (PE) license (required for sealing and signing plans and documents). Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Additional years of experience with engineering design. Experience working in a large academic, healthcare, or similar setting, and project management, RFP/specification preparation and consultant coordination. Maintain industry certifications such as Revit MEP accreditation, LEED AP for green building and Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA).

Brief Description of Duties:
The Assistant Director of Engineering (MEP) provides professional engineering leadership for campus engineering design and construction administration as related to mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for projects initial programming through the construction phase, overseeing consultant-performed engineering services, reviewing and sealing MEP engineering plans prepared by CPDC design staff, and ensuring code-compliant, cost-effective solutions. The role supports RFP/RFQ development, participates in design meetings, coordinates plans and specifications, and helps maintain campus design standards. It contributes to contractor coordination, procurement review, and contract management, while supervising engineering design staff and acting for the Director of Design when assigned. The position also assists with capital project reviews, agency coordination, and special initiatives that advance campus operations and long-term planning.

  • General Duties:
    • Assist in managing engineering services and coordination with architectural design for local projects.
    • Responsible for the management of the campus engineering design services contracted and performed by consultants.
    • Support the preparation and review of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Request for Qualifications (RFQ'S) and consultant submissions.
    • Participate in design development meetings and provide technical input to senior campus officials.
    • Serve as a departmental representative on engineering-related matters when assigned.
    • Contribute to strategies that support long-term campus goals and cost-effective design solutions.
    • Oversee all engineering drawings. Review, stamp and seal plans and documents.
    • When assigned, assist in managing departmental operations in the absence of the Director.
    • Support from an engineering aspect: the oversight of construction and renovation activities, coordination with trade unions, and supervision of contractors.
    • Oversee the engineering design staff, including supporting performance program development, evaluations, and workload coordination.
    • Support labor cost estimating for the design and construction of projects.
    • Assist in reviewing procurement applications and payment requests related to design.
    • Help maintain design-related contracts and provide input on contract specifications.
    • Track project progress in CPR and follow up with Procurement on outstanding issues.
  • Plans & Specifications:
    • Coordinate the preparation of plans and specifications for contractor or trade union work.
    • Ensure preferred engineering features are incorporated into preliminary drawings.
    • Support the review process for working drawings and assist in preparing materials for the Director or AVP approval.
  • Design Standards:
    • Development, implementation, and maintenance of campus design standards, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment, devices and fixtures.
    • Prepare draft plans and specifications; sealing/signing of engineering plans as required.
  • Special Projects:
    • Review capital project designs following initial planning phases.
    • Support coordination with SUCF, OSC, DASNY, and other agencies on design issues, scheduling, and code requirements.
    • Participate in special assignments such as identifying operational deficiencies and recommending improvements.
    • Review, stamp and sign all HSC MEP engineering drawings and documents, working with the Director of Planning, Design & Construction for HSC, architectural and engineering team for HSC.
    • Assist and review grant programs and designs with the Director of Special Initiatives and Grant Management.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
