POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in directing and managing all accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal control activities of the organization. This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, supervising accounting personnel, and assisting in financial planning, audits, and special projects. The Assistant Controller serves as a key member of the finance team and acts as a backup to the Controller, helping drive process improvements, maintain compliance with applicable accounting standards, and provide financial insight to support strategic business decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting & Close Process

  • Assist in the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reporting packages.
  • Manage and participate in month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Review general ledger activity and ensure proper account classifications and coding.
  • Oversee balance sheet reconciliations and investigate unusual variances.
  • Analyze financial results and assist in preparing management reporting and financial analysis.

Accounting Operations

  • Supervise daily accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, fixed assets, and cash management activities.
  • Ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Monitor and improve accounting workflows, controls, and procedures to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Review journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by accounting staff.
  • Assist with management of intercompany transactions and reconciliations.


Budget & Financial Analysis

  • Assist with annual budget preparation and forecasting processes.
  • Perform monthly overhead variance analysis against budget and forecast.
  • Support project profitability analysis, job costing reviews, and operational financial reporting.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to support management decision-making.

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, tax requirements, and regulatory reporting obligations.
  • Assist in maintaining and strengthening internal controls and financial processes.
  • Coordinate and support external audits, financial reviews, and regulatory examinations.
  • Support preparation and filing of sales tax, use tax, and other regulatory reporting requirements.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing coaching, training, and performance feedback.
  • Assist the Controller in establishing departmental goals and performance expectations.
  • Promote accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the accounting department.
  • Cross-train team members to strengthen departmental capabilities and business continuity.
  • Foster positive working relationships across departments and project teams.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Own and serve as the strategic leader for the CMIC ERP platform within Accounting, driving system optimization, process innovation, user adoption, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance financial operations, reporting, and internal controls.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as acting Controller during absences and provide departmental leadership as needed.
  • Assist with due diligence, acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic initiatives when applicable.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Minimum 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in construction, project-based, or multi-entity accounting environments preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Understanding of internal controls and accounting best practices.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting software systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
