Support Center - Irving
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for directing all Michaels external and internal financial reporting processes and Corporate Accounting functions. This position ensures compliance with SEC and US GAAP rules, and filing financial statements for equity holders, lenders, and internal parties. This position also directs and oversees the monthly close process including all significant accruals and accounting for non-recurring transactions. They will serve as the subject matter expert for all technical accounting issues/positions for Michaels.
Major Activities- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the Company's financial reporting and corporate accounting functions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
- Direct the preparation and review of timely, accurate, and compliant Quarterly and Annual Reports, including SEC filings and other external disclosures.
- Lead and optimize the monthly close process, driving cross-functional coordination and continuous improvement in accuracy and efficiency.
- Manage and maintain the integrity of the general ledger structure, ensuring consistency and completeness of financial data across cost centers and accounts.
- Lead equity accounting operations, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with relevant standards.
- Oversee lease accounting and fixed asset management, including owned property, in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Conduct and communicate technical accounting research and analysis, advising senior leadership on emerging accounting issues and their implications.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, fostering transparent and collaborative relationships to support audit readiness and compliance.
- Support the preparation of materials for the Audit Committee, ensuring clarity, relevance, and strategic insight.
- Lead monthly internal reporting activities, ensuring timely delivery of actionable financial insights to business leaders.
- Partner with cross-functional teams on strategic initiatives, ensuring accounting implications are appropriately addressed and integrated into business processes.
- Collaborate with Internal Audit to design and maintain robust financial controls and risk mitigation strategies.
- Analyze financial variances, trends, and root causes to inform strategic decisions and enhance forecasting accuracy.
- Champion a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by coaching and developing a high-performing team, fostering collaboration and problem-solving.
- Evaluate changes in business operations, systems, and regulatory environments to proactively adapt financial reporting and accounting practices.
- Identify and lead automation and process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Perform other strategic duties as assigned to support the evolving needs of the organization.
Other duties as assignedPreferred Education/Experience- Bachelors or Masters Degree in Accounting
- CPA required
Minimum Type of Experience Required- Minimum of 12 years of experience, including technical GAAP accounting experience
- Public accounting experience required
- Experience managing a team of >5
- Retail experience preferred
- Minimum 7 years of SEC reporting experience
- Proficient in Excel
- Strong knowledge of financial statements, internal controls, SOX, US GAAP.
- Essbase experience, Oracle experience preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with SEC filing systems (Workiva, Active Disclosure, etc)
