Summary

The Asset Manager provides maintenance and management support for Greenbrier-owned and/or managed railcar assets. Responsibilities include auditing estimates and invoices, collaborating with internal departments, and communicating with car owners, customers, parts vendors and repair shops. Follows established Asset Management SOPs and procedures. Conduct analysis and reviews of assigned shop management, ensuring mechanical and maintenance integrity. Proactively escalate and communicate asset status updates and identify and report anomalies and trends in maintenance spending.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Lifecycle management of railcar assets.
  • Maintenance performance and cost optimization.
  • Regulatory compliance and mechanical integrity.
  • Analysis of operational and maintenance data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Proactive communication of asset health, performance, and emerging issues.
  • Analyze maintenance spending, repair activity, and operational trends to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Monitor maintenance spend performance and proactively identify cost drivers and anomalies.
  • Evaluate repair facility performance, quality, turn times, capacity, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support railcar routing and network optimization decisions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, repair providers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Leverage data, automation, and emerging technologies to improve decision-making and efficiency.
  • Provide guidance on OTMA (One-Time Movement Approval) requests from customers.
  • Create shopping notifications using Greenbrier procedures.
  • Manage bad order and program cars in/out of repair shops using Greenbrier systems.
  • Obtain repair approvals from car owners/customers, as needed.
  • Act as liaison between GMS, car owners/customers, and repair providers.
  • Ensure repair procedures and costs meet AAR and Greenbrier standards.
  • Audit and process invoices for contract shops, and AAR maintenance.
  • Receive, verify, and accept all mandatory test documents.
  • Process wreck repairs, defect cards, JIC (Just In Case), estimates, and photos.
  • Manage car scrapping process when required.
  • Support coordination of warranty repairs.
  • Assist with account setup and provide feedback on documentation needs.
  • Maintain and review reports, parts, and component data in Greenbrier’s maintenance system.
  • Monitor and implement changes per industry rules and regulations.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Regulatory Compliance teams.
  • Participate in calls and meetings, including video and in-person.
  • Conduct railcar inspections, training, and shop audits as needed.
  • Provide backup coverage for other Asset Managers and leaders as needed.
  • Travel within the United States, Canada, and Mexico (approx. 10%).

Minimum Qualifications

  • College degree or equivalent work experience in rail or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in railcar maintenance planning or fleet management.
  • Familiarity with railcar equipment, shop operations, and repair processes.
  • Knowledge of AAR/FRA rules and regulations, including tank car compliance, preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret operational and financial data and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Experience with business intelligence and reporting tools (Power BI preferred).
  • Knowledge of process improvement and continuous improvement principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage technology, automation, and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency, quality, and decision-making.
  • Strong work ethic; self-starter with initiative.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication in office and field environments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and capable of learning new software systems.  Familiarity with AI.
  • Comfort working in both conceptual and technical environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work on-site at our Lake Oswego, Oregon office; remote work from other locations may be considered based on business needs.
