Key Responsibilities

Critical Care Management
  • Manage patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic surgeries, including:
    • Aortic surgery
    • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
    • Thoracic surgery
    • Valve surgery

Mechanical Circulatory Support Collaboration
  • Partner closely with attending physicians and APP colleagues in the management of advanced mechanical circulatory support devices, including:
    • ECMO
    • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABPs)
    • Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs)
    • Impella
    • Right Ventricular Assist Devices (RVADs)


Procedural Skills Development
  • Perform and refine common ICU procedures, including:
    • Bronchoscopy
    • Central venous catheter placement
    • Arterial line insertion
    • Chest tube management

Patient Experience & Quality of Care
  • Focus on optimizing patient experience, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes
  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based perioperative care

Diagnostic & Clinical Decision-Making
  • Order and interpret relevant diagnostic studies
  • Apply clinical judgment to guide timely and appropriate interventions

Emergency Response
  • Respond to critical and emergent situations
  • Provide rapid assessment and stabilization until definitive treatment is implemented

Ideal Candidate
  • Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Strong interest or background in cardiothoracic surgery and/or critical care
  • Comfortable practicing with a high level of autonomy in a fast-paced ICU setting
  • Committed to teamwork, clinical excellence, and continuous professional growth

What We Require:

Education: Graduate of an Accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.

Experience: 0

Licensure/Certification: Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) and RN licensure required or Physician Assistant ( PA) , DEA license . AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced Life Support certification preferred. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.

Other: Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers, good written and oral communication skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.

Compensation Range:
$107,993.60 - $172,785.60
Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
