SUMMARY:
The Director of Engineering is responsible for the strategic oversight and day-to-day leadership of all engineering operations within the hotel and its attached buildings, including engineering, painting/decorating, and building and grounds functions. This role provides direct leadership to three department managers and up to forty team members, ensuring operational excellence across diverse disciplines. A highly skilled and experienced leader, the Director of Engineering brings a strong technical background and a proven record of managing multidisciplinary teams and complex facilities, encompassing both newly constructed and legacy buildings. The position is accountable for maintaining the highest standards of service quality through effective preventive and reactive maintenance programs. Key responsibilities include workforce planning and development, budget oversight, capital planning, and end-to-end project management. The Director of Engineering ensures all systems, infrastructure, and facilities operate safely, efficiently, and in alignment with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and long-term asset strategies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve engineering and organizational goals
- Plan, coordinate, manage and execute capital projects, renovations, and new construction initiatives
- Prepare and manage the departmental budget
- Plan and oversee capital improvement projects, renovations, and upgrades to hotel facilities
- Recruit, train, and mentor engineering staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement
- Identify and implement innovative engineering solutions to enhance guest experiences and operational efficiency
- Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and teamwork within the engineering department.
- Communicate with hotel department heads to become aware of maintenance needs and ensure timely response to internal requests
- Act in a leadership role throughout the property
- Walk the property daily to identify issues
- Inspect and evaluate the condition of the Engineering areas and all assets
- Supervise engineers and facility staff including hiring, training, personnel development, etc
- Interview, hire, train, recommend performance evaluations, resolve problems, provide open communication and recommend discipline and/or termination when appropriate.
- Develop, implement, and maintain an effective preventive, and reactive, maintenance program for task scheduling, routines, and performance. Program to include procedures for annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly and other scheduled maintenance
- Coordinate maintenance efforts with outside contractors, tenants, and engineers
- Oversee all building systems including plumbing, HVAC, electrical issues and participate in fire life/safety awareness
- Respond to all emergency situations quickly (fire, evacuation, equipment failure etc.)
-Respond in a courteous manner to all guest questions, complaints, and or requests to ensure strong guest satisfaction.
-Maintain franchise standards and follow-up on inspection deficiencies
- Keep accurate completion and task records in project files
- Ability to work in a neat and efficient manner, keeping all work areas clean and organized
- Maintain a professional image at all times abiding by Leadership Team Grooming Standards
-General knowledge and awareness of OSHA/State of Michigan/Local and company safety standards.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Valid driver's license
- Universal CFC/EPA license is preferred
- Boiler Operator's License from City of Grand Rapids is preferred
- Mechanical Contractors license is preferred
- Journeyman's Electrical License is preferred
- State of MI journeyman or master plumber license is preferred
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent years of relevant work experience required
- Two (2) years of college or trade school equivalent in a mechanical, electrical, and/or technical disciplines is preferred
- 5+ years previous experience in maintenance/facilities/trades experience required
- Previous hotel maintenance management experience preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
